Year 1 Late Stage 1 (Target 4) An evidence-based approach (aligned with Science of Reading) to teaching high-frequency words
(HFWs) within a structured synthetic phonics (SSP) program, which sequences HFWs into the SSP
phonic sequence, and teaches irregular HFWs using the heart word method.

HFW that are regular and decodable. These words are used frequently, and so students need repeated decoding and
encoding practice, so that they can be recognised (read) and reproduced (spelled) in a flash. ♥ Heart Words
