FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE DEGREE

BACHELOR OF ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

MARCH 2023
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Since the early 1990’s, the school is not only a place characterized by learning, but an

environment where students are harassed and experience peer harassment (Juvonen, Wang, &

Espinoza, 2011). Bullying is an unwelcome, aggressive action that involves a real or

perceived power imbalance among school-aged youngsters. It is a major issue that affects

communities, schools and homes. The researcher became interested in this subject because

bullying was an issue there in Elementary. Perhaps the bullying it has experienced in the past

has contributed to its current situation. For students who have experienced bullying, this

study is extremely helpful because it may help them learn more, forget what happened to

them and also for their future and to lessen or release them from their past experience.

Bullying is the use of physical force or threats against an individual, another person, a

particular community or group with the intent to cause harm, death, physical harm or

development deficiencies or disorders. Bullies use many strategies and methods to gain

superiority over to their physically, emotionally or socially weak and defenceless victims.

Although the idea of bullying at school is not new, it has become more prevalent recently.

Bullying can occur anywhere some are in school, workplace and even within one’s family but

mostly it is commonly happening in schools because there are so many students there who

have been independently rising their confidence inside of the school.

Researchers, teachers, parents and students are all continuing to pay attention to the

problem of bullying in schools. Despite the widespread belief that small mocking and

harassment are included in bullying and that bullying is a normal part of childhood,

researchers are discovering more and more that bullying is a problem that can be harmful to

kids’ wellbeing. Several researchers have noticed that bullies display aggressive behaviour

towards their peers, instructors, parents, siblings and other family members. They own a good

attitude toward violence and are dawn to circumstances containing aggression.

Bullied learners do less academically and participate less in class discussions because

they are afraid of being bullied if they speak up in class, some children may be mistakenly

categorized as low achievers. Due to a fear of sticking out, bullied students perform less well

academically. Teachers frequently label those children as underachievers or uninterested

learners. These learners might then get less attention from teachers, which only causes them

to fall farther in their school’s academic standings. Academic achievement is the primary

factor influencing bullying in schools. Bullied children struggle to learn and may even

despise school because of this. They experience fear, self-blame, and feelings of weakness as

a result which effect their personality traits and self-confidence. They will also miss out on

the chance to socialize or take part in school activities. As a result, they will perform poorly

in school and have low educational achievement. Bullying makes both bullies and victims

more dissatisfied with school, and persistent bullying can result in stress and depression.

Bullying can lead to anxiety, low self-esteem, hopelessness and isolation. Children either skip

lessons or avoid going to school out of fear. Hence, a call to address such dilemma is highly

encouraged in order to create a learning environment where students are safe and protected

from any form of abuse.
