Tutorial - 01 Solid Mechanics
2. Determine the largest load 𝑃 that can be applied to the frame without causing either the average normal
stress or the average shear stress at section 𝑎– 𝑎 to exceed 𝜎 = 150 𝑀𝑃𝑎 and 𝜏 = 60 𝑀𝑃𝑎, respectively.
Member CB has a square cross section of 25 𝑚𝑚 on each side.
3. Two plates are connected by two 20 mm diameter bolts. The bolts fit tightly in the holes. The thickness of
each plate is 10 mm. If the plate is subjected to a tensile force of 50 𝑘𝑁, determine
(a) Average normal stress at a section, where there are no holes
(b) Average shear stress in the bolts

4. The steel connection in the following figure is designed to transmit a tensile force of 50kN. If the bolt
through the hole has 15 mm diameter, calculate:
(a) the shear stress in the bolt
(b) the direct stress in the plate

5. The beam is supported by a pin at A and a short link BC. If 𝑃 = 15 𝑘𝑁, determine the average shear stress
developed in the pins at A, B, and C. All pins are in double shear as shown, and each has a diameter of 18
mm.
6. A steel bar with a cross-sectional area 180 mm2 carries the axial loads as shown in the following figure.
Compute the total change in length of the bar. Take E=200 GPa.
