Section-1 Examples on Speed Control

1. A 6 pole lap wound shunt motor has 500 conductors in the armature. The resistance of the
armature path is 0.05 Ω. The resistance of the shunt field is 26 Ω. Find the speed of the motor
when it takes 120 A from dc mains of 100 V supply. Flux per pole is 2 x 10 -2 Wb.
ANS: 565 rpm [8.4]

2. A 250 V shunt motor has armature and field resistances of 10 Ω and 125 Ω respectively. When
running light, it takes a current of 5 A and the speed is 1,500 rpm.
i) Find the motor speed at its full load, the input current being 25 A.
ii) Find also the speed at this load if a resistance of 2.5 Ω is inserted in the armature circuit.
ANS: 1378 rpm, 1029 rpm [8.5]

3. A 250 V dc shunt motor, on no-load, runs at 1,000 rpm and takes 5 A. The field and armature
resistances are 250 Ω and 0.25 Ω respectively. Calculate the speed when the motor is loaded
such that it takes 41 A, if the armature reaction weakens the field by 3%.
ANS: 993.67 rpm [8.7]

4. A 10-hp, 230 V shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.5 Ω and field circuit resistance of 115
Ω. At no-load and rated (full) voltage the speed is 1,200 rpm and armature current is 2 A. If load is
applied, the speed drops to 1,100 rpm. Determine the armature current and the line current.
ANS: 40.2 A, 42.2 A [8.8]

5. A 230 V dc motor takes no-load armature current of 2 A and runs at a speed of 1,200 rpm. If the
full-load current is 40 A find (i) the speed on full load (ii) percentage speed regulation. Assume that
the flux remains constant. Resistance of armature is 0.25 Ω.
ANS: 1150.3, 4.32% [8.9]

6. A shunt motor runs at 600 rpm from 250 V supply and takes a line current of 50 A. Its armature
and field resistances are 0.4 Ω and 125 Ω respectively. Neglecting the effects of armature reaction
and allowing 2 V brush drop calculate (i) the no-load speed if the no-load line current is 5 A (ii) the
percentage reduction in the flux per pole in order that the speed may be 800 rpm when the
armature current is 40 A.
ANS: 647 rpm, 23.7% [8.13]

7. A belt driven dc shunt generator runs at 1,500 rpm delivering 10 kW at 220 V brushes. The belt
breaks, following which the machine operates as a motor drawing 2 kW power. What will be its
speed as a motor. The armature and field resistances are 0.25 Ω and 55 Ω respectively. Ignore
armature reaction and assume the contact drop at each brush to be 1V.
ANS: 1387 rpm [8.15]

Section-2 Examples on Torque Calculation

8. A 440 V, 14-poles lap wound dc shunt motor takes 1,550 A from the supply. There are 280
conductors. The effective diameter of the armature is 1.3 m and the active length of each
conductor is 0.33 m. The value of average flux density is 0.7 T. Calculate the value of torque
developed and speed of the motor.
ANS: 4651 rpm, 1400 rpm [8.21]

9. A 10 hp, 230 V shunt motor has an armature circuit resistance of 0.5 Ω and a field resistance of
115 Ω. At no-load and rated voltage the speed is 1,200 rpm and the armature current is 2 A. If the
load is applied, the speed drops to 1,100 rpm. Determine the armature current, the line current
and torque.
ANS: 40.2 A, 42.2 A, 73.2 Nm [8.23]

10. A 4-pole, 220 V shunt motor has 540 lap-wound conductors. It takes 32 A from the supply mains
and develops output power of 5.595 kW. The field winding takes 1 A. The armature resistance is
0.9 Ω and the flux per pole is 30 mWb. Calculate (i) the speed and (ii) the torque developed in
newton metres.
ANS: 711.5 rpm, 75.1 Nm [8.24]

Section-3 Field Control Method

11. A 220 V dc shunt motor runs at 760 rpm and takes armature current of 48 A. Find the resistance to
be added to the field circuit to increase the speed to 950 rpm at an armature current of 78 A.
Assume flux is proportional to field current. Armature resistance and field resistance are 0.15 Ω
and 240 Ω respectively.
ANS: 66.48 Ω [9.2]

12. The speed of a 500 V shunt motor is raised from 700 rpm to 1,000 rpm by field weakening, the
total torque remaining unchanged. The armature and field resistances are 0.8 Ω and 750 Ω
respectively and the current at the lower speed is 12 A. Calculate the additional shunt field
resistance required assuming the magnetic circuit to be unsaturated. Neglect all losses.
ANS: 330 Ω [9.3]

Section-4 Armature Control Method

13. A shunt wound motor runs at 500 rpm on a 200 V supply. Ra= 0.50 Ω, the current drawn is 30 A in
addition to field current. (i) What resistance must be placed in series with the armature in order
that the speed may be reduced to 300 rpm, the current in the armature remaining the same? (ii) If
the load is changed so that with the inserted resistance, the armature current reduces to 15 A,
what will be the speed?
ANS: 2.467 Ω, 420.3 rpm [9.7]

14. A 230 V shunt motor is taking a current of 50 A. The resistance of the shunt field is 46 Ω and the
resistance of the armature is 0.02 Ω. There is a resistance of 0.6 Ω in series with the armature and
the speed is 800 rpm. What alteration must be made in the armature circuit to raise the speed to
850 rpm, the torque remaining the same.
ANS: 0.3193 Ω [9.9]

15. A 220 V shunt motor with an armature resistance of 0.5 Ω is excited to give constant main field. At
full load the motor runs at 500 rpm and takes an armature current of 30 A. If a resistance of 1.0 Ω
is placed in the armature circuit, find the speed at (a) full-load torque (b) double full-load torque
ANS: 426.84 rpm, 317 rpm [9.10]

16. A 220 V dc shunt motor takes 22 A at rated voltage and runs at 1,000 rpm. Its field resistance is
100 Ω and armature circuit resistance is 0.1 Ω. Compute the value of additional resistance
required in the armature circuit to reduce the speed to 800 rpm when (i) the load torque is
proportional to speed (ii) the load torque varies as the square of the speed.
ANS: 2.778 Ω, 3.497 Ω [9.13]

Section-5 Braking / Plugging

17. A 50 hp, 440 V dc shunt motor is braked by plugging. Calculate the value of resistance to be
placed in series with the armature circuit to limit the initial braking current to 150 A. Calculate the
braking torque so obtained. Assume armature resistance as 0.1 Ω; full-load armature current =
100 A, full-load speed = 600 rpm.
ANS: 5.7 Ω, 877.95 Nm [9.36]

18. A 220 V, 20 kW dc shunt motor running at its rated speed of 1,200 rpm is to be braked by
plugging. The armature resistance is 0.1 Ω and the rated efficiency of the motor is 88%.
Determine: (1) The resistance to be connected in series with the armature to limit the initial braking
current to twice the rated current. (ii) The initial braking torque (iii) The torque when the speed of
the motor falls to 400 rpm.
ANS: 1.98 Ω, 318.31 Nm, 214.73 Nm [9.37]

19. A 500 V dc shunt motor having an efficiency of 80% operates a hoist having an efficiency of 70%.
Determine the current taken from the supply in order to raise a load of 500 kg at 4 m/s. If
rheostatic braking is employed, what resistance must be put in the armature circuit in order to
lower the same load at the same speed?
ANS: 70.07 A, 22.75 Ω [9.38]
