HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
OBJECTIVES
1. Identify one’s stage in human development.

2. Share challenges experienced during

adolescence.

3. Realize the importance of becoming

responsible adolescent in preparation
for adult life.
Human Development

focuses on human growth and changes across

the lifespan, including physical, cognitive,
social, intellectual, perceptual, personality
and emotional growth. The study of human
developmental stages is essential to
understanding how humans learn, mature
and adapt.
HAVIGHURST`S
DEVELOPMENTAL TASKS
DURING THE LIFE SPAN
ROBERT J. HAVIGHURST ELABORATED ON
THE DEVELOPMENTAL TASKS THEORY IN THE
MOST SYSTEMATIC AND EXTENSIVE MANNER.
Havighurst recognized that each human has three sources for
developmental tasks. They are:
•Tasks that arise from physical maturation: Learning to walk,
talk, control of bowel and urine, behaving in an acceptable
manner to opposite sex, adjusting to menopause.
•Tasks that arise from personal values: Choosing an occupation,
figuring out one's philosophical outlook.
•Tasks that have their source in the pressures of society:
Learning to read, learning to be a responsible citizen.
The developmental tasks model that Havighurst developed was
age dependent and all served pragmatic functions depending on
their age.
His main assertion is that development
is continuous throughout the entire
lifespan
IF THE PERSON SUCCESSFULLY ACCOMPLISHES AND
MASTERS THE DEVELOPMENTAL TASK, HE FEELS PRIDE
AND
SATISFACTION, AND CONSEQUENTLY EARNS HIS
COMMUNITY OR SOCIETY’S APPROVAL.
Conversely, if the individual is not successful at
accomplishing a task, he is unhappy and is not
accorded the desired approval by society,
resulting in the subsequent experience of
difficulty when faced with succeeding
developmental tasks.
IN YOUR OWN, WHAT COULD BE
THE POSSIBLE ACTIVITIES OR TASK
AT EACH STAGE OF
DEVELOPMENT?
Havighurst proposed a bio psychosocial model of
development,
wherein the developmental tasks at each stage are
influenced by the individual’s biology (physiological
maturation and genetic makeup), his psychology
(personal values and goals) and sociology
(specific culture to which the individual belongs)
WHAT COULD BE
YOUR CHALLENGES
AS AN ADOLESCENT?
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT?
EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT?
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT?
MENTAL DEVELOPMENT?

changes related to puberty by age 15.

• Boys are still maturing and gaining strength,

muscle mass, and height and are completing
the development of sexual traits

scores.

expectations and low self-concept).

attractiveness.
• May complain that parents prevent him or her
from doing things independently.
• Starts to want both physical and emotional
intimacy in relationships.

dependency and subordination to one that reflects
the adolescent’s increasing maturity and
responsibilities in the family and the community,
• Is more and more aware of social behaviors of
friends.
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

• Seeks friends that share the same beliefs,

values, and interests.
• Friends become more important.

select role models.
Developmental tasks are what you
need to do in each developmental
stage what will help you adjust
with the changes and demand in life.
For adolescents like you who are in
transition to becoming young adults,
these tasks will significantly
help you in your developmental and
make it possible for you to comply with
the demands that come
with the crucial stage.
