Instrument Name Picture Uses
#10 Blade Used primarily for making large skin incisions, e.g., in laparotomy.
Metzenbaum Scissor Used to dissect and
undermine delicate tissues. Lighter scissors used for cutting delicate tissue (e.g., heart) and for blunt dissection. Also called “Metz” in practice
Pott’s Scissor Used for creating
incisions in blood vessels. Grasping & Holding Instruments
Instrument Name Picture Uses
Babcock Forcep Used for grasping and encircling delicate structures such as ureters, fallopian tubes, bowel, ovaries, and appendix.
Foerster Sponge Used for creating a
Forcep sponge stick, for grasping tissues such as the lungs, or for removing uterine contents.
Mayo-Hegar Needle Used for holding
Holder heavy needles when suturing. Clamping & Occluding Instruments
Instrument Name Picture Uses
Mixter Forcep Used to clamp, dissect, and occlude tissue. Is often used to place a tie or vessel loop under and around a tubular structure such as a vessel or a duct, enabling the surgeon to grasp the ligature or loop and pull it up and around the structure to either ligate or retract. Ochsner Clamp Used in clamping off blood vessels to avoid bleeding during procedures such as orthopedic surgery.
Hemoclip Applier Used for occluding
vessels or other tubular structures. Exposing & Retracting Instruments
Instrument Name Picture Uses
Deaver Retractor Used to retract deep abdominal or chest incisions.
Richardson Retractor Used to hold back
deep tissue structures. Also called “Rich.”
Weitlaner Retractor Self-retaining for
exposing deep or smaller surgical sites. Also called “Wheaty.” Suturing & Stapling Instruments
Instrument Name Picture Uses
Linear Stapler Used for transection and resection of tissues during abdominal thoracic, gynecological, and pediatric surgeries.
Intraluminal Stapler Used for creation of end-
to-end, end-to-side, or side-to-side anastomoses throughout the gastrointestinal tract. The stapler is used in both open abdominal and laparoscopic procedures.
Suture Needle Used for general closure
of skin, subcutaneous tissue, etc., and are sometimes used for ophthalmic and plastic surgery. It also allows the placement of the suture within the tissue, carrying the material through with minimal residual trauma. Viewing Instruments
Instrument Name Picture Uses
Sims Speculum Used for examining the vagina and cervix. Sims' speculum is inserted into the vagina to retract the anterior or posterior vaginal wall. Ideal for use when needing a greater visual field when suturing a perineum or vaginal wall tear.
Hirschman Used to visualize the lower
Anoscope portion of the rectum and anus. Suctioning & Aspirating Instruments
Instrument Name Picture Uses
Yankauer Suction Used to suction Tube oropharyngeal secretions in order to prevent aspiration.
Poole Suction Tube Used to remove large
quantities of fluid from surgical sites during procedures. Dilating & Probing Instruments
Instrument Name Picture Uses
Hegar Uterine Dilator Used to measure the level of dilation of a woman's uterus or to induce further dilation.
Hawkin Ambler Used to provide
dilator smooth, easy dilation of the cervix. Measuring Instruments
Instrument Name Picture Uses
Bone Depth Gauge Used to gauge the depth of the holes drilled in bones during implants and other similar surgical procedures.
