Mathematics
in our World
MRS. ANALYN B. SEROHIJOS
Learning Identify patterns in nature and regularities
in the world.
Targets Articulate the importance of mathematics
in one's life
What we should be able to
know and do... Argue about the nature of mathematics -
what it is and how it is represented,
expressed, and used
Express appreciation for mathematics as
a human endeavor
What is
Mathematics?
Please provide your own
description or definition of
mathematics.
What is the
mathematics in...
1. riding a jeepney when
travelling to the university?
2. buying local street food for
snacks?
3. traversing the road leading
to your home?
4. doing your daily activities?
5. preparing yourself for
graduation?
What is
Mathematics?
Mathematics is the science
and study of quality, structure,
space, and change.

Mathematicians seek out patterns, formulate

new conjectures, and establish truth by
rigorous deduction from appropriately chosen
axioms and definitions.
What can you

say about the

video?

What are the different kinds

and forms of patterns you
have seen in the video?
How does these patterns
help us understand the
connection between our
world and mathematics?
Patterns in

Nature and the

Regularities in

the World
Mathematics exist
everywhere as
patterns do in nature.

Patterns and counting are correlative.

Counting happens when there is

pattern. When there is counting there is logic.

Pattern in nature goes with logic or

logical set – up. There are reasons behind a

certain pattern.
Some

Examples of

Pattern in

Nature
Symmetry
It is the agreement in
dimensions, due proportion
and arrangement

Harmonious and beautiful proportion and

balance
In math an object is invariant to any

various transformations, including

reflection, rotation or scaling

Spiral
It is a curve which

emanates from a point,

moving farther away as it

revolves around the point

(nautilus shell)
Meander

one of a series of regular

sinuous curves, bends,

loops, turns or
windings in the channel of

a river, stream or other

watercourse
Wave
a disturbance that transfers
energy through matter or
space, with little or no
associated mass transport

Oscillations or vibrations of a physical

medium or a field, around fixed locations
Surface waves in water show water
ripples
Foam
a substance formed by

trapping pockets of gas in

a liquid or solid.

Ex. A bath sponge, the head on a

glass of beer
Tesselation
a special type of tiling (a

pattern of geometric

shapes that fill a two-

dimensional space with

no gaps and no overlaps)

that repeats forever in all

directions

Ex. honeycomb, sunflower seeds,

tiled floor
Fracture or

crack
the separation of an object or

material into 2 or more pieces

under
the action of stress

Displacement or discontinuity or surface

within a solid geometric shapes with no

overlaps or gaps
Normal tensile crack-displacement is

perpendicular to the surface displacement

Shear crack (slip band or dislocation)-

displacement develops

tangentially to the surface displacement

Stripes

series of bands of strips,

often of the same width

and color along the

length.
Fractal
never-ending pattern,
infinitely complex pattern that
are selfsimilar across different
scales, created by repeating a
simple process over and over
in ongoing feedback loop,
driven by recursion

The pattern of chaos

Trees, coastlines, mountains, clouds
Affine
the processes of rotation,

Transformations reflections and scaling

Observe the
following list of
numbers
0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, ...

Does it follow a pattern?

What number should be next to
21?
How can you predict or accurately
guess what number comes next?
The

Fibbonacci

Numbers
Fibonacci The Rule
The Fibonacci Sequence can be written as a

Numbers “Rule”
First the terms are numbered from 0 onwards,

like this:

So term number 6 is called x6 (which equals 8)

Fibonacci Numbers
and the Golden
Ratio
The Fibonacci numbers was
discovered by Leonardo Pisano
(Leonardo of Pisa), son of
Guglielmo Bonaccio. The name
"Fibonacci" is a contraction of the
Latin term "filius Bonnaci" which
stands for "the son of Bonnacio".
Fibonacci Numbers
and the Golden
Ratio
The Golden Ratio was later
discovered and formalized by
the German mathematician and
astronomer Johannes Kepler by
dividing a Fibonacci number by
the one that precedes it.

Key
Takeaways
Mathematics is
everywhere.
There is beauty in
mathematics.
There is mathematics in
nature.
Mathematics seeks out
patterns and regularities
in the world.
The human being is
capable of recognizing
patterns in the world.
Mathematics reveals
its secrets only to those
who approach it with
pure love for its own
beauty.

OUTPUT #1
Make a reflection paper about
the importance of
mathematics in your life. Cite
instances on how you use it in
your daily life. Your work must
not be less than 200 words but
not more than 350 words.
Your work will be graded as
follows:
 Clarity of Ideas – 10 points
 Organization – 10 points
 Spelling/Grammar/Punctuation
– 5 points

Document Size - A4; Font: Arial;

Font Size: 12.
OUTPUT #2
Aside from the aforementioned

objects that exhibit patterns in

nature, give another example

(only one (1)) by illustrating it

through a drawing. Put it in an

A4 size bond paper. It can be in

a portrait or landscape

orientation. Write a brief

explanation (3-5 sentences)

about the pattern being

presented in your illustration.

Your work will be graded as

follows:
 Pattern used in the artwork – 10

points
 Creativity – 10 points
 Originality – 5 points
 Explanation of artwork – 5 points
