Western Hemisphere Points Project 1 1
Here is your final culminating project of our Geography Unit. You will choose what you want for a
grade. You will score points by completing projects in each category. You MUST complete 6
points per topic. It must be done well in order to receive all the points listed. You may propose a
project or assessment for a category. Upon approval of your proposal, we will discuss the point
value, and then you may attempt the project or assessment.
A bibliography (works cited page) must be included with each researched assignment.
At least one assignment is due on each of the following dates: 03/16, 03/20, 03/23, 03/27,
03/30, 04/03, 04/07, 04/10. These are the official dates. Plan to complete one project for
each date.
3 pts: Look at the islands off of your countries coast (if applicable), find information based on the
communities that have lived and/or still live on the islands. What factors led to the success or failure
of these communities?
3 - 6 pts: Pick a physical feature common to your location (can be mountains, rivers, lakes, etc.) and
record their peak heights, lengths, or depths of the feature you chose. Create a visual graph or chart
to show the difference from largest to smallest. You will only choose one feature, but there will be
many different options in the country/state you chose. You need to choose 10 of the features
(examples from Maine: Sugarloaf, Katahdin, Sunday River, etc.) or (Rivers: Penobscot, Saco, Allagash,
etc.).
3 pts: If your industry declined, investigate the reasons why it declined. Explain this information in a
one page, 12 pt font (Times New Roman) on how historically the industry grew and how it is now or
did decline.
3 pts: Pick three industries in your location and write a paragraph for each explaining how it
impacts the economy.
3 pts: Discover one of the industries in your country/state and evaluate how it developed and why
we the people are dependent on this industry.
3 pts: Look at the tourism industry at your location and explain how the different types of tourism
are affected by the seasons. What different factors allow these tourist industries to thrive during the
different seasons?
3 pts: Track the weather of your location for each day during the week. Create a chart based off the
precipitation, temperature, barometric pressure, and wind of that week.
3 pts: Research the climate of your country/state and create a colorful presentation of your choice
based on what it is like.
3 pts: Gather information on natural items found in your location. You can use pictures (as we
cannot travel to many of the countries/states, you can find pictures of the natural resources). Once
you find them, explain the climate, vegetation, and/or animal species you can find.
3 pts: Choose a town in your country/state and find how they run their local government. Give a
visual breakdown of who the members involved are and how different decisions are made. You can
present this information in a format you want.
3 pts: Select a native tribe from your location. Research the tribe and create a presentation about
how they lived and what their lives are like today.
3-6 pts: Research how your location was founded. Were there any wars in your location or did they
participate in any wars? If you are doing a state in the United States then see if your state had any
contribution to the Civil War.
3-6 pts: Investigate an ethnic group that created a community in your location. Explain how and why
they ended up in that location, where they settled first (Was it a specific town or city?), and where
they are now. Talk about the different types of work they do and how they have still maintained
their culture in your country/state.
3 pts: Find a popular recipe native to your location and share it with the class. Explain how it
became native to it and any history behind it. Create a recipe page for your food.
3 pts: Look into the music culture of your country/state. What musicians were born in that location,
what bands started, and what genres are most commonly known. Make a visual containing good
facts and information on the music you found.
3 pts: Research some interesting buildings in a town of your choice (has to be located in your
country/state). Look at historical buildings, landmarks, landforms, etc. Create a visual (could be a
map of it) with the information you gathered.
Project or Assessment Proposal: (explain how it relates to your location and the category)
