Quadratic Activity 1

This activity we will learn how to graph the quadratic function which
is called the parabola, 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐.

The most basic quadratic function is 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑥 2

Let’s look at the function when a = 1

Fill out the table and then plot the points and graph the following
function:

x 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 (x, 𝑓(𝑥))

-3 9 (-3,9)
-2 4 (-2,4)
-1 1 (-1,1)
0 0 (0)
1 1 (1,1)
2 4 (2,4)
3 9 (3,9)

Make sure your graph has a nice “rounded” curve at the bottom.

Click “zero” under all three sliders.

Moving the “a” slider:

1. As you move “a” up and down:

a. Describe what happens to the quadratic function when “a” is a
positive number.

b. Describe what happens to the quadratic function as you allow

“a” to get very close to a = 0, but leave “a” positive?

c. Describe what happens to the quadratic function as you allow

“a” to get larger in the positive direction.

d. Describe what happens to the quadratic function when “a” is a

negative number.
e. Describe what happens to the quadratic function as you allow
“a” to get very close to a = 0 but leave “a” negative?

f. Describe what happens to the quadratic function as you allow

“a” to get larger in the negative direction.

2. Generalize what happens as you move “a”.

We can therefore conclude, that if the value of the “a” term is positive
the parabola will open upward, whereas if the value is negative it opens
downward.
