The document contains an activity worksheet on sets for a mathematics course. It includes questions to determine properties of sets, roster notation for sets based on word definitions, operations on sets like unions and intersections, and two word problems presented as Venn diagrams to calculate values based on given set information. The worksheet tests understanding of fundamental set concepts and set operations.

Activity 3: Sets
I. Determine if each statement is true or false.
1. The intersection of two infinite sets is also infinite. True.
2. If A, B, C are sets where A ⊆B, then A × C ⊆B × C. False.
3. If A and B are sets and if A ⊂B, then A ⊂ B ′. False.
4. If A ≠ B then A ∩ B = ∅. True.
5. For any two sets A and B, if A ∪B = A, then B ⊂ A False
6. All sets are disjoint with the empty set. True.
7. If two sets are disjoint, then their corresponding power sets are also disjoint. True.
8. A set is a subset of its power set. True

II. Consider the sets. Write U, A, B, C in roster method and determine the
following:

U = {a,c,d,e,g,i,l,m,n,q,r,s,t,u} U = {a,c,d,e,g,i,l,m,n,q,r,s,t,u}
A = {x | x is a letter in the word quadrilateral} A= {q,u,a,d,r,i,l,a,t,e,r,a,l}
B = {x | x is a letter in the word square} B= {s,q,u,a,r,e}
C = {x | x is a letter in the word rectangle} C= {r,e,c,t,a,n,g,l,e}

1. A∪ B = {s,q,u,a,d,r,i,l,t,e,r}
2. (A∪ B) ∩ C = {r,e,t,a,l}
3. (B ∩ C) ∪ (B ∩ A) = {q,u,a,r,e}
4. B’ ∩ C’ = {d,i,m}
5. A/C = { q,u,d,i}
6. A x C = {(q,r), (q,e), (q,c) (q,t), (q,a), (q,n), (q,g), (q,l)}
= {(u,r), (u,e), (u,c) (u,t), (u,a), (u,n), (u,g), (u,l)}
= {(a,r), (a,e), (a,c) (a,t), (a,a), (a,n), (a,g), (a,l)}
= {(d,r), (d,e), (d,c) (d,t), (d,a), (d,n), (d,g), (d,l)}
= {(r,r), (r,e), (r,c) (r,t), (r,a), (r,n), (r,g), (r,l)}
= {(i,r), (i,e), (i,c) (i,t), (i,a), (i,n), (i,g), (i,l)}
= {(l,r), (l,e), (l,c) (l,t), (l,a), (l,n), (l,g), (l,l)}
= {(t,r), (t,e), (t,c) (t,t), (t,a), (t,n), (t,g), (t,l)}
= {(e,r), (e,e), (e,c) (e,t), (e,a), (e,n), (e,g), (e,l)}
7. A’ ∩ B’ ∩ C’ = {m}
8. (A∪ B) ‘= {c,g,m,n}

III. Solve and Present the Venn Diagram

1. In a class of 25 students, 18 were math majors, 12 were computer science majors, and 7
were dual major in math and computer science. How many students were
a) majoring in math only?
b) not majoring in computer science?
c) not math or computer science majors?

Given:

Number of Students: n (U) = 25

Math Majors: n (M) = 18

Computer Science Majors: n (C) = 12

Dual Major in Math and Computer Science: n (M∩C) = 7

Solutions:

a. n (M) - n (M∩C) = 18-7 = 11

b. n (U) - n (C) = 25-12 = 13

c. n (U) = n (M) + n (C) - n (M∩C) + n(M∪C)

25 = 18+12-7+ n(M∪C)

25 = 23 + n(M∪C)

n(M∪C) = 25-23

n(M∪C) = 2
2. In a group of 40 first year college male students, 22 like basketball, 18 are interested in
tennis, and 14 like volleyball. Of these students, 7 are interested in both volleyball and
basketball, 9 like both basketball and tennis, 5 like both tennis and volleyball, and 3
students like the three sports. How many students
a) like volleyball only?
b) like basketball, but do not like tennis or volleyball?
c) at least one sport?
d) exactly one sport?
e) are interested in tennis only?

TENNIS

GIVEN:
First Year College Male Students: n (U) = 40
Students like Basketball: n (B) = 22
Students like Volleyball: n (V) = 14
Students like Tennis: n (T) = 18
Students like Basketball and Tennis: n (B∩ T) = 9
Students like Tennis and Volleyball: n (T∩ B) = 5
Students like Basketball and Volleyball: n (B∩ V) = 4
Students like Three Sports: n (B∩ V ∩ T) = 3

Solution:
a. n (V∩ B) - n (B∩ V ∩ T) = 4
n (T∩ B) - n (B∩ V ∩ T) = 2 * 14 – 4 – 3 – 2 = 5 only students who like volleyball
n (V) = 14
n (B∩ V ∩ T) = 3
b. n (B) – n (T∩ B) - n (V∩ B) = 22- 9- 4 = 9 who like basketball but not tennis and volleyball
c. n (U) - n (V∩ B) - n (B∩ T) - n (T∩ B) - n (B∩ V) = 40 – 9 – 5 – 4 = 22 at least one sport
d. n (U) - n (V∩ B) - n (B∩ T) - n (T∩ B) - n (B∩ V) - n (B∩ V ∩ T) = 19 exactly one sport
e. n (T) - n (B∩ T) - n (T∩ B) = 4 students are interested only in tennis
