Directions: In the following questions, a statement of assertion (A) is followed by a
statement of reason (R). Mark the correct choice as:
Assertion: The interval {x : x ∈ R, −4 < x < 6} is represented by (-4, 6).
Reason: The interval {x : x ∈ R, -12 .4 < x < 10} is represented by [-12, -10].
a. A is true, R is true; R is a correct explanation of A.
b. A is true, R is true; R is not a correct explanation of A.
c. A is true; R is false.
d. A is false; R is true.

Directions: In the following questions, a statement of assertion (A) is followed by a
statement of reason (R). Mark the correct choice as:
Assertion: If n(A) = 3, n(B) = 6 and A ⊂ B, then the number of elements in A ∪ B is 9.
Reason: If A and B are disjoint, then n(A ∪ B) is n(A) + n(B).
a. A is true, R is true; R is a correct explanation of A.
b. A is true, R is true; R is not a correct explanation of A.
c. A is true; R is false.
d. A is false; R is true.

If U = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9}, A = {2, 4, 6, 8} and B= {2, 3, 5, 7}, verify that: (A ∩ B)' = A'∪B'. 2
Ans: B = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
4) Let U = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7}, A = {2, 4, 6}, B = {3, 5} and C = {1, 2, 4, 7}, find A′ ∪ (B ∩ C′) 2
A′ = {1, 3, 5, 7}
C′ = {3, 5, 6}
B ∩ C′ = {3, 5}
A′ ∪ (B ∩ C′) = {1, 3, 5, 7}

In a survey it was found that 21 people liked product A, 26 liked product B and 29 liked 3
product C. If 14 people liked products A and B, 12 people liked products C and A, 14 people
liked products B and C and 8 liked all the three products. Find how many liked product C
only?
Ans:
It is given that
n (A) = 21,
n (B) = 26,
n (C) = 29,
n (A ∩ B) = 14,
n (A ∩ C) = 12,
n (B ∩ C) = 14,
n (A ∩ B ∩ C) = 8
Ans: Let F,B,C be the sets of students who received medals in football, basketball, and cricket respectively.
n(F)=38
n(B)=15
n(C)=20
n(F∪B∪C)=58
n(F∩B∩C)=3
We know,
n(F∪B∪C)=n(F)+n(B)+n(C)−n(F∩B)−n(B∩C)−n(F∩C)+n(F∩B∩C)
n(F∩B)+n(B∩C)+n(C∩F)=73−58+3=18
the number of students who received medals in exactly two of the three
sports is,
n(F∩B)+n(B∩C)+n(C∩F)−3×n(F∩B∩C)=18−9=9

In an University, out of 100 students 15 students offered Mathematics only, 12 4
students offered Statistics only, 8 students offered only Physics, 40 students offered
Physics and Mathematics, 20 students offered Physics and Statistics, 10 students
offered Mathematics and Statistics, 65 students offered Physics.
Based on the above information answer the following questions.
i. The number of students who offered all the three subjects is:
ii. The number of students who offered Mathematics is:
iii. The number of students who offered statistics is:
iv. The number of students who offered mathematics and statistics but
not physicsis:
(CBSE)
Ans: Let M, S and P be the sets of students wo offered Mathematics, Statistics and Physics
respectively. Let x be the number of students who offered all the three subjects, then the number of
members in different regions are shown in the following diagram.
From the Venn diagram, we get, the number of students who offered Physics.
= (40 - x) + x + (20 - x) + 8 = 65 [given]
⇒ 68 - x = 65
⇒x=3
i. (b) 3
Solution: The number of students who offered all the three subjects are 3.
ii. (a) 62
Solution: The number of students who offered Mathematics
= 15 + (10 - x) + x + (40 - x)
= 65 - x
= 65 - 3 = 62 [∵ x = 3]
iii. (c) 39
Solution: The number of students who offered Statistics
= 12 + (10 - x) + x + (20 - x)
= 42 - x
= 42 - 3 = 39 [∵ x = 3]
iv. (a) 7
Solution: 10 - x = 10 - 3 = 7

Ans Here
n(U) = a + b + c + d + e + f + g + h = 60 (i)
n(H) = a + b + c +d = 25 (ii)
n(T) = b + c + f + g = 26 (iii)
