I. General precautions for operation

I-1 Do not lift load exceeding the specified value.

Neve~ apply the load exceeding the capacity prescribed

in the specifications.

The crane has been designed to be most economical when

working efficiently under the specified load. The more

the crane is used overloaded, the shorter the life of

the crane. Be sure to avoid such abuse.

Observe the limit load at the maximum swivelling radius

prescribed in the specification by the hoist of the jib,

as in the case of this crane. Overturning, upsetting

or breakage due to overload and over-radius are often

seen in jib type cranes •.

Lifting loads exceeding the prescribed value may result

in damage to the machine, breakage of rope, down fall

of the load, or injury or death.

Pulling obliquely will apply unnatural force to various

parts, shorten the life of the machine and lead to a

serious accident. Pay sufficient care to safety.

I-2 Do not remove safety devices.

If the limit switch for luffing to supplement the shortage

of lift, or the limit switch for hoisting to expand the

work range, it will lead to accident in many cases.

·The safety devices supplied are carefully adjusted and

fixed at specific locations. Da. not remove them, nor

change tbe adjusted locations, unless anything unusual

happens.

- 1 -
I-3 Precautions at the time of operation

(1) Safety operation

Crane handles heavy cargo. If the cargo falls from a

height, or is shaken, serious accidents may occur.

Considering the weight and size of the cargo, or other

people or things which might be in the way of operation,

operate the crane with suffic:i,ent care. While repairing

the crane, previous arrangement between workers and

operator is required. Moving the crane·without warning

may hurt or kill others. Be extremely cautious

. . ·.· :con-

cerning their safety.

When winding up all the lift, the limit switch is

actuated at the upper limit and the hook stops auto-

matically. Be sure to wind up quietly with sufficient

care.

(2) Smooth operation

Do not start or stop with a jerk, but operate the crane

smoothly: it will reduce the wear of various parts and

prolong ~he life of the machine.

Avoid operating the machine with full load and at full

speed, or starting stopping more often than is .necessary

(inching operation).

While operating, t~e operator should be alert to any

abnormal sound, vibration or generation of heat. If

any abnormality arises, stop the operation immediately,

examine the causes and consider the countermeasure.

- 2 -
II .. Inspection and maintenance

II-1 General.precautions for maintenance and inspections

Intervals of inspections of crane parts vary depending

on.freq~ency or conditions of use • .

Determine the intervals after actual use of crane. It

{s recorrunended to mark the date of inspections in the

schedule.

According to the marked schedule, spare parts can be

ordered or purchased smoothly.

In order to perform cargo works smoothly, earlier detec-

tion of abnormality is desired by maintenance and

inspection.

Inspections are classified into daily inspection and

regular inspection.

(1) Daily inspection

Daily inspection is carried out before the start of

operation. Inspect the lubrication, generation of heat,

noise, looseness.of clamping, contact areas of electric

equipment, brake, lifting hook and wire rope and, if

any abnormality is found, repair or replace with a new

part.

The operator should perform the daily inspection before

and after tl;le operation without fail and, if any abnor-

mality is detected while operation, stop the operation

immediately to inspect the suspected part.

- J -
If there is no full-time operator, perform daily opera-

tion once a week at least.

(2) Regular inspecticn

Regardless of the existence of defects or abnormality,

overhaul inspection of major parts is performed at

regular interval, where, such defects can be found that

are not detected in daily inspection. The interval of

regular.inspections should be determined depending on

~he frequency of use and work amount. Annual major

inspectioµ and monthly inspection are required at least .

.\

II-2 Parts of steel structure

Parts of steel structure are rarely damaged if the crane

is used properly.

But inspect them carefully in the annual inspection with

respect to the looseness of bolts, bent condition of

members, crack or corrosion etc. After use for a long

time, coupling bolts may be loosened or welds may be

cracked. Inspect with test hanuner and repair suspect

parts earlier.

Where rust occurs on members, these will become thinner

·and strength will be reduced. When designing members,

no such allowance has been made. Repaint inunediately

if rust is found. (Re~er to the description below regard-

ing painting.)

II-3 Lubrication

Proper or incorrect lubrication will have a direct effect

- 4 -
on the life of ball bearings and roller bearings. Make

up a schedule about the selection of the lubricating oil

and amount and intervals of lubrication.

Refer to the attached list regarding the selection of

lubricant and lubricating intervals.

Grease lubrication and oil lubrication have been employed.

(1) Grease lubrication

Grease lubrication ~s employed for SLEWING RING,

sheave bearing is not desired by lubrication for

oilless bearing.

Ball bearing and roller bearing do not require re-

plenishing for a long time after once being lubricated,

different from plain bearing, though it depends on

degree of use. Life of grease is usually 2,000 hours

approximately. Select fixed dates of replenishing on

the basis of this hours.

(2) Oil lubrication

Oil lubrication has been employed for ball bearing and

roller bearing of reduction gears for luffing

hoisting and slewing. Dirty oil in the gear casing.

has adverse effects on gears and bearings. Inspect the

stain of oil regularly as well as oil amount.

II-I. Gear

The engagement of gears Gan be ~etected from the noise.

Listen to the noise from the start of operation.

Substitute gears when the thickness of teeth has reduced

by 20 - 25 % at the pitch circle usually, but substitution

- 5 -
is recommended for luffing gear and hoisting gear at the

time of 10 - 15 % in wear. Damage of teeth of these

gears may lead to severe accidents.

Substituting a pair of pinion and gear provides good

engagement and little noise, and.prolongs the life of

gear.

When opening the casing cover to change the oil and

inspect the gear, remove the cover carefully to avoid

dust or foreign matter from entering.

II-5 Wire rope

Accidents through breakage of wire rope· are the major

..
cause of crane accidents together with nook accidents.

Pay special attention to daily inspection, lubrication

and handling.

(1) Limit of use of wire rope

Substitute wire rope under the following conditions:

-1 When the diameter of the rope has reduced by 7 %.

-2 When 10 strands have been cut in 1 rn of the rope.

-3 When a kink caused at some part of the rope does not

restore to the original state.

-4 When the rope is reduced in length partially or is

twisted out of shape.

-5 When the rope is deemed unusable because of rust or

corrosion.

- 6 -
(2) Substitution of wire rope

When substituting wire rope, pay attention to the follow-

ing points.:.

-1 Use the one of specified length. When winding down the

maximum lift, at least two turns should be still wound.

around.the drum.

-2 Wind the rope in the correct way to prevent kink of

the rop~-

-3 Wipe the rope clean with cloth while winding to remove

foreign matter.

-4 Fix the end on the drum side with cotter so as not to

loosen with vibration.

-5 Apply sufficient oil.

(3) Precaution in use

-1 Idling for new rope

When using new rope after substituting, apply about a

half load instead of full load and make the machine

idle a. few times.

-2 Deviation ~£ rope

Take care that the rope is not.deviated from the block

and the groove of the drum. If the rope is used in

deviated state, the rope gets appreciably out of shape

and kinking or breakage will be caused.

-3 Caution in use

Do not give strong jerks to rope in use. It has an

adverse effect on rope and other parts also.

- 7 -
II- 6 Sheave

While using sheave, the groove in contact with the rope

wears. Especially if pulling obliquely, flange wears

faster and is damaged. When the groove has worn remar-

kably, .or the flange has got out of shape or broken, they

should be substituted.

II- 7 Hook

The part on which the rope for rigging is suspended

wears and becomes concave and the opening be~omes larger

after long use. Inspect the materials, which may have

been hardened, become brittle, or cracked, at the annual

inspection. ~If the partial wear of the part to be sus-

pended with rope for rigging is· ~ot too far gone, with

grinder. Smooth to an even surface. If worn remarkably,

or cracked, substitute a new one. Never repair the

crack by welding.

II- 8 Painting

Undercoating for rust proofing has been applied once and

finish coat;i_ng twice. Durable period is about one to

two years. When rust or blister has caused on about

10 % of the coated area., recoating is required. Before

recoating, remove the rust completely. Select a day of

fine weather, and check there is no oil or grease on the

face to be coated.

When coating repeatedly, coat after the undercoating has

dried completely (about 12 hours)~

1. Receipt of goods, transportation and storage

Receipt of goods:
The consignment should be examined immediately after delive1y
for transportation damage. If damage is found, a damage report
should be prepared in the presence of the freight carrier (condi-
tion of transport insurance).

Transportation and storage:

In order to prevent damage to the housings, shafts and bearings,
violent impacts and vibrations should be avoided during transpor-
tation. If the gear unit or geared motor has to be stored, the stor-
age premises must be dry and not subject to marked temperature
fluctuations (to prevent formation of water condensate). If the
gear unit is to be stored for a long period of time (approx. i year
or more), the gear unit should be equipped for extended storage.
For this purpose, if appropriately ordered, an additive is added to
the gear oil at the factory, which protects the whole of the interior
of the gear unit against corrosion. Where the gear unit is filled
with synthetic oil containing a long-term storage additive, the oil
level must be reduced to the correct level before operation, since
the unit will be overfilled with synthetic oil on account of the
extended storage additive.

2. Installation, general information

Installation site:
For geared motors selected from the catalogue the installation
location should have normal ambient conditions. If otherwise,
special measures are necessary, please refer to Section 3.3. An
unimpeded supply of cooling air should be ensured to the motor
(fan guard rear must not be obstructed) and variable speed gear
units (at the output flange or bearing cap). Exit of air from the side
louvers of the variable speed geared motor housings should also
be unimpeded. The distance from the wall to the motor fan guard
in the case of motors with accessories such as brakes, tachogen-
erators etc. should be chosen with regard to the maintenance,
so that the fan guard can be dismantled with ease. During instal-
lation attention should also be paid to the accessibility of the oil
drain plug, oil level plug and breather plug.

2.1 Installation, mounting positions

Satisfactory lubrication and venting during operation can be en-
sured only with the correct mounting (refer to the nameplate for
the intended mounting position). The drives should be closed for
transportation, i.e. provided with a blank plug. The breather plug
is supplied with the gear unit separately. Before operating the
geared motor the blanl\ plug must be replaced by the breather
plug (after the final transportation, i.e. at the final installation site).
The lubricant level should be checked at the same time.

- 1 -
EU ROD RIVE

2.2 Installation of foot mounted and flange mounted gear

units
The gear unit or geared motor should be mounted on a flat, vibra-
tion damping and torsionally rigid structure. The gear unit must
be carefully aligned and care should be taken to avoid housing
distortion due to uneven surfaces. The flatness of the gear unit
supporting surface should not exceed the following values:
for gear units up to size 80: ~ 0.1 mm
for gear units above size 80: ~ 0.2 mm
When utilising the largest possible output torques or overhung
loads, in addition to the foot mountings by means of bolts of
strength class 8.8 or above, additional positive connections
such as e.g. cylindrical grooved pins, dowel pins, adapter
sleeves or adapter pieces should be provided. These measures
are also necessary in the case of dynamically stressed screw
connections (for shockload factor II + Ill, see 2.3.1 ). Spring lock
washers, serrated lock washers, toothed lock washers, Belleville
spring washers or strc:iin wc:ishers may not be used in place of the
positive connection method.

3. Maintenance

3.1 Lubrication of gear units and motor bearings

Lubrication table I Lubricant filling quantity

For gear units it is important to check the oil level regularly. The
lubricant should be changed at the following intervals:

Mineral oils Every 10000 operating hours or every two years

and greases: (for housing temperatures~ 70° C, measured
close to the oil drain plug)
Temperature increases of up to respectively 15 ° C
lowers the lubricant change interval by half from
the original specified guidance time
- up to 85 °C still approximately 5000 h
- up to 100° C still approximately 2500 h

Synthetic oils: Every 20000 operating hours or every four years

(for housing temperatures~ 100° C, measured
close to the oil drain plug)

Under particularly severe operating conditions (e.g. high humidi-

ty, aggressive environment, large temperature fluctuations or
high ambient temperature) shorter oil change intervals are neces-
sary.

- 2 -
EURO DRIVE

The grease packings of bearings of motors and gear units

should also be changed after approx. 10000 operating hours.
The bearing should be cleaned before being packed with new
grease. The amount of grease on motors and input bearings of
gear units should occupy about 1/3 of the free bearing space.
On the bearings of the output shafts and pinion shafts (Parts List
Lfd. No. 5) the amount of grease should occupy about 2/3 of the
bearing space between bearing elements. Repeated grease
changes over the working life of the bearings should be carried
out only after carefully checking that the dismantled and cleaned
bearings are in a satisfactory state.

Warning: The synthetic lubricants listed in the lubrication table

must not be mixed with one another or with mineral
lubricants.

SEW must be consulted on lubricants suitable for temperature

ranges not shown in the lubrication table (e.g. -40° C to +40° C).

3.2 REPLACING METHOD OF LUBRICANT

(1) Unscrew the drain plug and drain the old lubricant
completly. Fill the new lubricant from plug for air vent.
(2) Check the oil level per bar oil gauge. The oil level should
be between upper and lower lirnit marking.

--------------------------r---------------
1) Check ''tne unit, upon receipt of' it, the type, ·capacity,
HPMs of' input and output shaf'ts and reduction ratio as
to whether they coincide with your requirements as well as
any def'ects which might have occurred to on its trans-
portation. If there is anythin~ undesirable, consult our
sales agent without delay.

2) Installation.
Make sure of' the flatness of mountine place which must
be flat enough to receive the gear unit on. When the
flatness is poor, the mountinG' portions are subject to be
damaged. I~ven thoug-h the unit were not dnm<'\f,'ed, there
would invite opera ting- noise around though the unit its elf'
can not 1~enerate noise. Noise on equipment is, almost of
the cases, incurred by the comli tion of place· where the
equipment is installed.

J) Precaution for f'ixing accessories on the G'ear unit:

Mounting of sprocket, V-pulley nnd open-gear on the input
and output shafts of the unit shall be carried out according
to tlle ·ways described hereunder (the standard dimensional
tolerance for the input and output shafts of' SHINKO's gear
uni ts corresponds to JIS 7 for bore ref'e rence) :
(A)
Remove rust preventive enamel coated on the shaI'ts not giving
any dama~e on the surfaces of' the shafts. If the removal
should be hard, wipe it out with thinner or gasoline completely.
( D)
Coat oil lightly on the shafts and mount the acces~ory
required on. Tap lightly with a plastic hammer, when
necessary, in the axial direction.
(c)
No hitting the shaf'ts in radial direction is allowed.
( IJ)
The accessories should be mounted on the shafts at as nearer
as possible to the cnsin~ of the unit.
(E)
Couplinr;s must be aligned to thP. shafts just in line.
Flexible couplin~s arc recommended to use.
(F)
Connection of the unit with the matinr; equipment, except
direct drive system, is 111ade with a wny o:f cantilever in
most cases. So, when the pulleies that receive hanr,-inr; loads
are used, special attention should be pniu to the overhune-
loads permissible to the ~ear unit.

4) Lubrication
(A)
Make sure of the lubricant quantity.
Check the presence of oil and its quantity by means or oil
gauge. Oil level must be at the center of the gauge.
( B)
We recommend the oil with EP additive and minimum viscosity
index of 95 and viscosity expressed accordinr; ..t.o. ISO J448
changing with temperature. J.··or stnndard applications, use the
following quality:
Temperature -20 C +5 C Viscosity class VG 100
+5 c ... +40 c II II VG 150
+40 c ... +65 c II II VG J20
For wide temperature changes, synthetic lubricants with EP
additives, minimum viscosity index of 165 anct viscosity class
VG 150 or VG 220, are recommended.
However, it is always advisable to use age resistant oils,
relative to their operational temperature. The period for
oil changes depends on the type of application and the duties
performed. Oil quantities for each gear unit are shown in
the catalogue.

These are determined as follows:

a)
For mountinF, with output shaft horizontal, fill to the center
line of' the unit.
b)
For mounting with output shaft vertical, fill the unit in full,
checking when oil has reached working temperature.
Extension pipes mny be installed to facilitate checking of oil
level, dependin~ on type of mounting. Check oil fillin~ in all
cases.
(c)
Oil Changes
Oil changes must be carried out after first 50/100 hours
op~ration, anrt subsequently after every 2,500 hours or at
least every 12 months. These intervals may be modif'ied,
dependin~ on actuhl operating conctitions. When changed, we
recommend that the inside of' the unit is flushed out with
flushing fluid. Oil should be chnnged when hot to prevent
growing up of sludF,e deposits.
It is advisable to check the oil level at least once a month.
If mo re than 10~~ of to ta 1 o i 1 capacity has to be added, check
oil leakes.
Do not mix the oil with different types. Bspecially, never
mix mineral with synthetic oils.
