Ex.1 Two trains 99 metres and 121 metres long respectively run in the same direction with a
speed of 32 and 40 km hr respectively. Find the time in which they will take to cross each other
from the moment they meet.
Sol. Since the trains are running in the same direction.
Their relative speed
= 40 – 32 = 8 km/hr
and the total length of both the trains
= 99 + 121 = 220 m
or, = 0.22 km.
Time taken to cross each other
or, = 0.22/8 hrs
= 0.22×60×60/8 secs.
= 99 Secs. Ans.
By Short-cut Method
Reqd. Time = a+b/u~v
Here a = 0.099km, b = 0.121km, u = 32
and v = 40
= 0.099 + 0.121/32 ~ 40 = 0.22/8hrs
= 99 Secs. Ans.
Ex.2 A person standing on a platform which is 170 metres long, observed that a train which took
7 ½ seconds to pass him and passed completely through the station in 21 seconds. Find the length of
the train.
Sol. Let the length of the train be x metres and its speed y metres per sec.
Distance traveled in crossing the platform
= (170 + x) m
and Time taken in crossing the platform
= 21 secs.
Y = 170 + x/21 …(i)
But distance travelled in crossing the man
= x metres
and Time taken in crossing the platform
= 7 ½ secs.
Y = x/15/2 = 2x/15 …(ii)
From equation (i) and (ii),
170 + x/21 = 2x/15
or, 2550 + 15x = 42x
or, 27x = 2550
x = 2550/27
= 94 4/9 metres Ans.
By Short-cut Method
Length of the train = x × T/T1 – T
Here x = 170m, T = 7 ½ secs. And T1 = 21 secs.
= 170 × 7 ½ /21 – 7 ½ = 1275/13 ½
= 94 4/9 m. Ans.
Ex.3 A man can row three quarter of a km. against the river in 11 ¼ minutes and return in 7 ½
minutes. What is the speed of the man in still water ?
Sol. Speed of the man down the river
= 3/4 × 60/7.5
= 6 km/hr
and Speed of the man against the river
= 3/4 × 60×4/45
= 4 km/hr
If x km/hr and y km/hr be the speed of man in still water and the river respectively, then
x + y = 6 and x – y = 4.
x = 5 km/hr. Ans.
By Short-cut Method
Speed of the man in still water
= 1/2 (x + y)
Here x = 6, y = 4.
= 1/2 (6 + 4)
= 5 km/hr. Ans.
Ex.4 How many minutes does Aditya take to cover a distance of 400 m, if he runs at a speed of 20
km/hr ?
Sol. Aditya’s speed = 20 km/hr = (20 × 5/18) m/sec = 50/9 m/sec.
Time taken to cover 400 m = (400 × 9/50) sec = 72 sec = 1 12/60 min = 1 1/5 min.
Ex.5 While covering a distance of 24 km, a man noticed that after walking for 1 hour and 40
minutes, the distance covered by him was 5/7 of the remaining distance. What was his speed in
metres per second ?
Sol. Let the speed be x km/hr.
Then, distance covered in 1 hr. 40 min. i.e., 1 2/3 hrs = 5x/3 km.
Remaining distance = (24 – 5x/3) km.
5x/3 = 5/7 (24 – 5x/3) 5x/3 = 5/7 (72–5x/3) 7x = 72 – 5x
12x = 72 x = 6
Hence, speed = 6 km/hr = (6 × 5/18) m/sec = 1 2/3 m/sec.
Ex. 6 If a man walks at the rate of 5 kmph, he misses a train by 7 minutes. However, if he walks at
the rate of 6 kmph, he reaches the station 5 minutes before the arrival of the train. Find the distance
covered by him to reach the station.
Sol. Let the required distance be x km.
Difference in the times at two speeds = 12 min = 1/5 hr.
x/5 – x/6 = 1/5 6x – 5x = 6 x = 6.
Hence, the required distance is 6 km.
Ex.7 A and B are two stations 390 km apart. A train starts from A at 10 a.m. and travels towards
B at 65 kmph. Another train starts from B at 11 a.m. and travels towards A at 35 kmph. At what
time do they meet ?
Sol. Suppose they meet x hours after 10 a.m. Then,
(Distance moved by first in x hrs) + [Distance moved by second in (x – 1) hrs] = 390.
65x + 35 (x-1) = 390 100x = 425 x = 4 1/4.
So, they meet 4 hrs. 15 min. after 10 a.m. i.e., at 2.15 p.m.
Ex.8 A thief is spotted by a policeman from a distance of 100 metres. When the policeman starts
the chase, the thief also starts running. If the speed of the thief be 8 km/hr and that of the policeman
10 km/hr, how far the thief will have run before he is overtaken ?
Sol. Relative speed of the policeman = (10 – 8) km/hr = 2 km/hr.
Time taken by policeman to cover 100 m = (100/1000 × 1/2 ) hr = 1/20 hr.
In 1/20 hrs, the thief covers a distance of (8 × 1/20) km = 400 m.
