Chapter I

Background of the study

Introduction

Writing is one of the few skills that an individual should cultivate. Writing is important

because it is used when you write down everything that people think, feel and aim for and dream

about. Even if they can't express what they want to say, they can do it by writing and making an

essay on their life.

The effective expression of one's own opinion and idea about the writing of the topic,

writing using one's own language is a skill that must be cultivated by the student. This is the skill

of writing that no one has the skill. Writing was the first thing we learn and the secomd thimg is

to understand it. Lots of teens nowadays are struggling to make an essay even they were given an

essay one.

Introduction from the presented knowledge and thoughts that a writer has a level of

profiency in writing essays that can be shown from his skills in the Filipino subject, so this is a

reason why essay writing helps to develop critical thinking, language skills and analytical skills,

so this is what our main point we want to learn more about it as a researcher. Writing helps

develop students' ability to think logically and solve problems.


Perspective of the Researchers

This research was led by Krizel M. Dumagco and his member who is Chriztalyn

David, Shantyl Ysa Atay, Ammira Otadoy ,Joshua Olimpiada, Jeremy James DelaPeña,

Ralph Tacay , ArthurJan Cotelo, Rahel Padios.

The researchers are current students of Marian College who are in grade 11 St. John Paul

II . The researchers conduct a study about the “ Level of essay writing skills in Filipino subject

among Marian College Grade 8 student S.Y.2022-2023”. To know how good they’re at making

essay and we want know if they can do it.

The researchers follows the positivist perspective. The positivist researchers is the

objective observation and all knowledge can be proven through experience and observation.

Theoretical Framework

According to E.J. Gibson(1975) the theory we us is Bottoms-Up theory. This is a

traditional reading. It is fruitful. behaviorist theory that focuses more on the environment in the

development of reading comprehension. According to this theory, reading is recognizing a series

of written symbols to give their corresponding sound. This is the combination of bottom-up top-

down theory because the comprehension process has two directions (McCormick, 1998). By

using two methods (bottom-up top-down), interaction takes place between the text and the

reader. It is formed from the knowledge and ideas that the reader brings to the understanding of
the text. Therefore, there is an effective understanding of the text when a reader uses his

knowledge of language structure and vocabulary whilesing previous knowledge (schema) and

perspectives

Stament of the problem

This study is "Level of Essay writing skills in the Filipino subject among Marian college

Grade 8 students 2022-2023" aims to answer the following question.

1. What are the common possible mistake in making essay?


2. What are the common weaknesses of the student in writing essay?

3. What are the struggle of the student while making essay?

Hypotheses

The researcher can address the presented problems through those presented by the following:

1. Alternative hypothesis: There are the common weakness because there mistake is they

cant make their own essay and they lack knowledge about it.

Null hypothesis: There are no significant common possible mistake is you don’t know

what to put on your paper and your ideas is always changing

2. Alternative hypothesis: There are the common weakness because they forget they don’t

know how they constract their words properly and they always forget punction

Null hypothesis: There are no significant common weakness student are lack of

vocabulary, therefore they always find problems in choosing correct words in writing,

they cannot be organized the paragraph well.


3. Alternative hypothesis: There are the common weakness is they’re stuggling in making

their essay on there own they just trust there knowledge on google or on someone.

Null Hypothesis :There are no significant common weakness of the student is they

struggle to make their own because they think that they cant make it.

Scope and Limitation

This study focuses on the experience of selected eighth grade students at Marian College, this

study is about essay writing skills in the Filipino subject. We want to know if they’re doing well

in doing essay and do they improve already. The limitation of this research is that all student in

Grade 8 will be our respondent.

Importance of the study

Its contents will serve as an instrument for students, parents and researchers. Here we will

know what is the importance of learning for each one

Students - this research will help to further expand their knowledge on how to be a good student.

It serves as a guide so that their thinking is clear so that they can cope with their studies.
Teachers- Will have the knowledge of what their students should do by guiding and helping the

students in the right way of their studies.

Researcher- A researcher is persistent, strong-willed, exploratory, circling, traveling, even

paying the fare. Not afraid to be alone among strangers and to be treated strangely by people. In

a word, adventurer

Definition of Term

Marian college- A place where the researchers conduct there research

Writing- Is the one who will help us to express our feeling and our future dreams and help us

create and explore new ideas.

Essay- this can help you expand your ideas and make your own theories or you can anything

what particularly in your mind

Research- A researcher is the one who can help us to socialize and help us to expand our ideas

and help us answer the question in our answers in our head. You can do it while investigating

and making a research about it

Chapter II

Review Related literature

In this part, the relevance literature and studies that have been significantly used by

the researcher will be reviewed to make the presentation of the study more clear.

According to the study titled “Essay writing skills in the Filipino subject among

students”

The study conducted by the researchers this year, the essay writing skills. The outcome

of their study is the study is that level of writing skills has a significant relationship. In this study

he suggested developing enrichment activities for children’s writing. Student various teaching

tools should be developed of the student’s writing skills that have also been provided by the

researchers.

According to the article titled “mga correct method in writing an essay on the

Filipino subject” necessary in writing is to learn the correct techniques in writing the essay to

have an interesting writing.

According to what was mentioned by lazaro and liwanag , it is necessary for writers to be careful

in writing, essay use of small and capital letters and use of words.

Writing an essay is revelation of knowledge that never disappears in the minds of those

who read and will read it because it can be translated in every era, the memory of the writer may

disappear but the knowledge. Reading and writing are the most unique in the academy because
they are studied and trained to meet the needs of different disciplines. So in academia, reading

and writing work together in shaping your efficiency not only in research matters and discovery

of knowledge or in various academic activities, these two macro skills are also used to prepare

you for your profession when it comes of time and so that you can be the shoulder of your people

towards your mutual well-being and development. Like writing, it canbe compared toa bird’s

unique way to get where it wants to go. And before a bird flies high, it carefully trains its flight.

Like you,don’t you want to reach something at the right time? That’s why you are training in

school to finish the course rhat you think will answer the fulfilment of your dreams. Writing is a

communicative skill cultivated in a person, from then to the present. It’s an extraordinary

physical and mental work because it’s where you do what you want.

Express with the help of transferring knowledge to a paper or any writing device. In

addtition to transferring knowledge to a paper or any writing device. In addition to transferring

letters and symbols that creates words, phrases, sentences to a paragraph to create an essay,

writing also includes drawing pictures that are given an artistic interpretation that comes from the

writers imagination and thoughts.

According to the study, a person must first understand the personal destiny destined

for every 5 creature and must understand the relationship of the letters or works that occur in the

society he belongs to. (Lumbreda 2017)

According to the study that the ability to write an essay is something that is very elusive

for most of us whether it is writing in the first language or the secomd language. ( Badayos 2014)
Chapter III

Research Design

The design chosen by the researchers is descriptive research and quantitative research ,

descriptive is an investigation that describe and interprets an object or topic. The study or

descriptive method was used to systematically describe the level of proficiency in essay writing

among students who are in the 8 grade through essay writing.

Research Environment

The study will be conducted within Marian College Inc. Climaco street, Ipil zamboangga

Sibugay, it is a catholic education institution of learning that provides basic education

kindergarten, elementary, high school and college.

Research Participants

The selected respondents in this analysis are students who are in the 8th grade of Marian college.

St Mark is our choice to be included in the whole study.

They are the ones chosen to be respondents because they are the ones chosen to know what the

student's level of essay writing ability.


Research Instrument

The instrument that used to obtain the necessary data in the study is a survey-questionnaire or

questionnaire. Researchers can show their method of how they will do their research so that it

can be successfully carried out. Here, in their survey, the handing out of questionnaires is

included. The researchers will personally distribute and answer the questionnaire to the selected

respondents.

Sampling method

We used non probability in Grade 8 in the way of handing out questions to Marian college

students. We want to find out the students ability level of writing essay. Non-probability

sampling is a methodology used in which the choice of focus or survey is not selective but all

population is involved.

Method of data collection

By having a survey, the researcher can show their method of gathering data or information in

their research.
Data treatment

The data collected by the researchers from the respondents following the questionnaire will be

combined or tied. These data will serve as answers to the questions presented by the study. The

results will be compared according to the difference in the answers or by using a bar graph to

present the results in an orderly or organized manner.
