The film talks about the viewpoint of C.S. Lewis on science and scientism. Clive
Staples Lewis is a famous British writer and a theologian known for his works such as
the “Chronicles of Narnia.” He compared science to magic in three ways and that it
can function as a religion, encourages a lack of skepticism, and is driven by a desire
for power. Science is great but as Lewis said, just like all human disciplines science
can be corrupted, and that some people pursue science because they want power
over other people.
The documentary affected me in a way that it affected some of my insights about
science. It led me to a lot of questions about whether if science is good or bad or if
only science could save us and the world. Some people would say that without
science life would be better or simpler. But in reality, science is the reason people are
able to watch television, the reason people are living much longer and healthier lives.
We cannot deny the fact that science brought many good things and unique benefits
to humanity such as computers, televisions, medicines, and many other things. We
live comfortably today because of these scientific inventions. No one can deny the
value of these scientific discoveries, but we must not also underestimate the risks of
scientific advances to our society. As they always say, for everything good, there is
something bad. Many people have traditionally viewed scientific progress with
skepticism, leading to arguments about whether science is good or evil. I somehow
agree with Lewis’ insights about science and scientism. Based on what I have
watched, Lewis didn't have anything against science, but he did have something
against scientism or the view that current science dictates world knowledge and that
scientist should make decisions about public policy and even the scope of our moral
standards and religious beliefs. Science, as previously said, is something that exists
outside of a person's values and morality in order to gather information. In light of this,
Lewis was correct in his opposition to scientism. Science is a tool for everyone, not a
means of controlling society's ideals and morality. In the documentary Lewis related
magic in science in a way that both of them is desired by the people in order to have
control over anything. Like in magic, people want the magician’s wand because it can
do anything and have the power to do so, to be above and to control others and
likewise, although not all, science is pursued as it can make people powerful and also
be able to be in control. He thinks that much of modern science can be used as power
to dominate over the world and was more dangerous than magic since at the end of
the day magic fails and science works, and magic was only temporary but the modern
science is life span, a long period of time. A good example for this is the atomic bomb.
We all know that the world's first atomic bomb strike on two Japanese cities killed
millions of people. Many residents in those cities are still suffering from the harmful
consequences of atomic radiation years after the incident. In today's world, many
countries possess nuclear weapons. Some countries also have hazardous chemical
and biological weapons that can be used to commit mass murder. In my opinion it is
not all science that must be blamed and it is not science that causes wars, global
warming, and etc. but rather our own human characteristics, like our thirst for
knowledge, greed, and power. Some people tend to abuse the discoveries of science
just for power of for their personal desires.
I do believe that science, and all of its components are great. Everything has the
potential of being good or bad and it all depends on the people who are behind it or
on who will utilize it. Everything must have a limitation; the use of science too must
have a limitation and if we set these limitations then we will get rid of the “bad science.”
