 Science, technology, and Society

 Is an interdisciplinary program of study that focuses

on understanding the relationship between Scientific
development and the everyday life of people.
 Can you imagine the world without
Science and Technology? How about a
life without electricity?
- comes from the Latin word “scientia”
which means “knowledge’’
 - is a systematized body of knowledge
Based on experimentation, research and
facts
 - it is the study of something.
 Technology is literally the application of
Science.
 -it is the application of Science

 That’s
why it is really impossible to
separate science and technology.

 What are the examples of technology?

 Isa group of persons joined together for
a common purpose or by common
interest. The society make use of science
to come up with better technology in
order for its people to live in accordance
with their necessities.
 Science drives technology by making
technology possible through science
breakthroughs.(science discoveries)
 Without Technology, some science
experiments would not be possible

 They are contributing to one another.

 Science drives technology, Technology
drives Science (vise versa)
 Science is as old as the world itself. There
is no individual that can exactly identify
when and where the Science began.
From the Genesis of time, science has
existed. It is always interwoven with the
Society, so how can be science be
defined?
 1. Science as an Idea. It includes ideas,
theories, all available systematic
explanations and observation about the
natural world and Physical world.
 Examples of natural world
 Volcanoes
 Gravity
 Atoms
 Plants
 and etc.
 2.Science as intellectual activity. It
encompasses a systematic and practical
study of the natural and physical world.
This process of study involves systematic
observation and experimentation

 3. Scienceas body of knowledge. It is a

subject or discipline, a field of study, or a
body of knowledge that deals with the
process of learning about the natural
world and physical world.
 4.Science as a personal and social
activity. This explains that science is both
knowledge and activities done by human
beings to develop better understanding
of the world around them. It is a means to
improve life and to survive in life. It is
interwoven with people’s lives.
 It make our life simpler
 It helps us to organize our daily activities
 It helps our job can be done faster
 It help us to communicate easier with
other people
 It help us to know and understand other
culture and society better.
 Withoutthe inventions of Science and the
unending efforts of Scientist, many
sickness and diseases like cancer were
considered uncurable sickness and
diseases. In transportation, railway,
modern ocean liner, jet plane and motor
vehicle have made our lives more
comfortable
 It can be easily manipulated by
irresponsible person
 Well be too dependent when technology
fails we are helpless (in one way or another)
 Sometime it affects our health and lifestyle
(like cellphone too much exposure to
radiation, we may feel severe headache and
a big chance to get pimples). It has increase
the anxiety of our lives
 Invasion of our privacy
 When technology goes in the wrong
hands then it can negatively impact
society such as increasing rate of cyber
crime, hacking stealing of personal
information and pornography.
 Science has been responsible for
pollution and has given us the nuclear
bomb w/c threatens our very existence.
 It was the period of Enlightenment when the
development in the fields of mathematics,
physics, astronomy, biology and chemistry
transformed the views of society about nature.
 It is the emergence or birth of modern science
 Scientific Revolution was the golden age for
people committed to scholarly life in Science but
it was also a deeply trying moment so some
scientific individuals that lead to their painful
death or condemnation from the religious
institution who tried to preserve their faith,
religion and theological views.
 The idea of Scientific Revolution is
claimed to have started in the early 16th
century up to the 18th century in Europe.
Why in Europe?
 The probable answer is the invention of
the printing machine and the blooming
intellectual activities done in various
places of learning, and the growing
number of scholars in various fields of
interest.
 The printing machine is invented by
Johannes Gutenberg
 Who are Scholar?
 a person who has studied a subject for a
long time and knows a lot about it.
 In short they are expert to that area or
knowledgeable enough in that subject.
