    Floods and flash floods

     A flood is an overflow of water that submerges land that is usually dry. In the sense of
    “flowing water”, the word may also be applied to the inflow of the tide.
     Floods are the most frequent type of natural disaster and occur when an overflow of water
    submerges land that is usually dry.
     A flood caused by heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time, generally less than 6
    hours.

    Impact

     As floodwaters spread they can threaten lives, inundate properties and businesses, destroy
    belongings, damage vital infrastructure and prevent access to essential public services.

    Damage

     Loss of human life.


     Property and infrastructure damage.
     Road closures, erosion, and landslide risks.
     Crop destruction and livestock loss.

    Causes of floods

     Heavy rainfall resulting from tropical weather disturbances


     Deforestation
     Improper agricultural practices
     Inadequate design of drainage channels and structures.

    What to do BEFORE a flood

     Build an emergency kit and make a family communication plan.


     Avoid building in a floodplain unless you elevate and reinforce your home.
     Elevate the furnace, water heater and electric panel in your home if you live in area that has
    a high flood risk.
     Consider installing “check valves” to prevent flood water from backing up into the drains of
    your home.

    What to do DURING a flood

     Listen to the radio or television for information.


     Be ware that flash flooding can occur.
     Do not wait for instructions to move.
     Be ware of stream, drainages channels, canyons and other areas known to flood suddenly.

    What to do AFTER a flood

     Avoid moving water.


     Stay away from damaged areas unless your assistance has been specifically requested by
    police, fire, or relief organization.
     Return home only when authorities indicate if it is safe.

    If you must prepare to evacuate,you should do the following:


     Secure your home. If you have time, bring in outdoor furniture.
     Turn off utilities at the main switches or valves if structed to do so.
     Disconnect electrical appliances.
