    Red Pandas

    Red pandas are a type of mammal. Despite their


    name, they are more like raccoons and weasels than
    pandas. They are known for their acrobatic skills and
    for spending a lot of their time in trees.

    • An adult red panda is slightly bigger than a cat.
    • Their bodies are covered in brownish-red fur but
    their bellies, arms and legs are black. They also have
    small white markings around their eyes.
    • They have long, ringed tails that are almost the same
    length as their bodies.
    • They use these tails to help them balance and to
    keep themselves warm in winter.

    W h e re D o T h e y L i v e ?
    • Red pandas live in mountainous forests. Many of
    them live in China, Nepal, Bhutan and India.
    • They live in high up forests and spend almost all
    of their time in trees. This keeps them safe from
    predators, such as snow leopards.
    • Spending so much time in trees has helped red
    pandas to become very good at balancing,
    climbing and jumping.

    What Do They Eat?


    • Red pandas are omnivores. They sometimes eat berries,
    bird eggs and small insects but mostly eat bamboo.
    • Like giant pandas, red pandas eat bamboo. In fact,
    they eat around 20,000 bamboo leaves each day!

    • Red pandas are mostly nocturnal animals.
    This means that they spend most of their
    day sleeping and wake up at night to find
    and eat food.
    • Red pandas have a special wrist bone to help
    them to tightly grip onto trees.

    are different charities that are trying to help
    to save them.
