the battle field to save his life and took shelter in a cave where he hid himself. He was wrapped
up in deep sorrow and out of disappointment. So, he gave up all his hope and struggle. One
day when he was lying in the cave, he saw a spider which was trying to reach the roof of the
cave. It made six attempts to reach its web but every time it slipped down. Now the king got
interested and watched the spider carefully. He was astonished to see that spider did not lose
heart but continued its efforts to reach up at the top. At the seventh attempt the spider was
successful in its attempt of reaching its web. This incident boosted up the spirit of King Bruce.
He gained new strength and fresh courage. He gathered his forces and fought another battle.
This time he fought with new vigor and enthusiasm and was ultimately successful in making
his country free.
Moral: Failure is the pillar of success.
4. A Greedy Farmer/The Golden Goose
Once upon a time, there lived a poor farmer who used to maintain his family with much
hardship. One day he went to market and bought a wonderful goose. At first glance his wife
insisted to kill the goose and determined to tame. One day, the farmer found there an egg
glittering lying outside his hut. He took it home and soon found to his delight that it was an
egg of pure gold. He could hardly believe his eyes and disclosed it to his wife delightfully.
Every morning the same thing occurred, and he soon became rich by collecting and selling his
eggs. Within a very short time, he owned huge sum of money and built a gorgeous house to
live in. But by this time the man became very greedy and impatient to have all the eggs at a
time. Since he was greedy and wanted to be millionaire overnight. So, one day he hit upon a
plan that he would kill the goose and get all the eggs of gold from its belly. The farmer told
his wife about his plan. She frequently forbade her husband to be greedy and requested to be
contented with what they have. The farmer did not pay any heed to his wife’s suggestion. He
immediately killed the goose with a sharp knife. No sooner had he cut its belly than unluckily
he did not find a single egg inside. He became extremely disappointed and lost the valuable
goose forever. Instead of becoming rich, he became poorer. Through this incident, the farmer
realized his fault clearly that over greediness brought misfortune for him.
Moral: Grasp all, lose all.
In his boyhood, Hazrat Abdul Quadir Jilani was going to Bagdad for education. On the eve of
his departure from home, his mother said to him, “My son, never tell a lie and don’t get
frightened in danger.” Bagdad was Jar away from his home. He began his journey in the
company of a band of merchants. The way was infested with robbers. After five days a gang
of robbers fell upon the travelers. One of the robbers caught hold of the boy. The gang leader
saw it and said, “Let the boy go. He has nothing with him.” At this, the boy said, “No, you are
wrong. I have forty gold coins sewn in my sleeves.”
The leader asked him why he told them about his gold coins. The boy said in reply that at the
time of his departure his mother forbade him to tell a lie. He could not disobey his mother.
Hearing this, a change came into the gang leader. He gave up robbery with all his men. They
began to lead a good and honest life. Being inspired by the truthful boy, they became good
men. They decided to reform themselves and gradually gave up all their bad habits.
Moral of the story: ‘Truth always triumphs.’
However, no sooner had he opened his mouth to bark at the dog than the piece of meat in his
mouth fell into the water and the current of the river washed away the piece. The dog
immediately jumped into the river but he could not find the piece.
As there was a current in the river, the dog had to swim hard against the current to reach the
bank. He was very tired and had no food to eat. Having found himself fooled by his own
greediness, he started crying. "Greediness brings misery; I'll never be greedy", he promised
himself.
9. A liar shepherd boy
Once upon a time there was a shepherd in a village. He used to tend a flock of sheep in a nearby
field. There was a thick forest next to the field. The shepherd was a great liar. He always got
pleasure to cheat people with his lies. While tending sheep in the field, he often cried out,
“Wolf, Wolf, help, help!”
Hearing his shouting the farmers usually left their work and rushed to him in order to save
him. But the boy laughed and got pleasure thinking that the farmers were foolish.
One day a wolf really came. The boy now cried aloud to attract the farmers. He cried and cried
for help. No farmer responded to his crying because they thought that the shepherd was making
fun with them. So, they did not come to help the boy. The wolf found the cowboy alone and
killed him. After eating his flesh it went away. The liar shepherd was thus punished for his lie.
