A persuasion speech is a specific type of speech which the speaker has a goal of convincing the
audience to accept his or her point of view. The speech is arranged in such a way as to hopeful
cause the audience to accept all or part of the expressed view. Though the overarching goal of a
persuasive speech is to convince the audience to accept a perspective, not all audience can be
convinced by a single speech and not all perspectives can persuade the audience. The success of
a persuasive speech is often measured by the audience's willingness to consider the speakers
argument.
The overall goal of all persuasion is action; that is, effective persuasion reinforces existing
behavior, changes existing behavior, or leads to new behavior. When a speaker’s main goal is to
achieve action, he or she will also seek one of four sub-goals: adoption, discontinuance,
deterrence, or continuance of a particular behavior.
Adoption
Adaption is an action that asks listeners to demonstrate their acceptance of an attitude, belief, or
value by performing the action suggested by the speaker.
Discontinuance
This is the opposite of adoption. When a persuader's action goal is discontinuance, they want
their listeners to desist from doing something.
For example, a speaker might want their listeners abstain from criminal activities, so their focus
will be on all the problems crime can cause.
Deterrence
This is an action goal that asks the listeners to demonstrate their acceptance of an attitude, belief,
or value by avoiding a certain behavior.
For example if the speaker may warn the listeners who are not drug users on the dangers of using
drugs and discourage them against starting to use the drugs.
Continuance
This is an action goal that asks the listeners to demonstrate their acceptance of an attitude, belief,
or value by continuing to perform a certain behavior.
Give speech to encourage leaners to Higher Education Loans Board to help them pay their
outstanding fee balances, involve the other benefits like boosting their financial status as the
students, easy to apply because the process is online and also it comes with a bursary on top of it.
The learners will be convinced and they will start accessing Higher Educational Loans Board
even before you finish your speech. This is measured when you see learners actively asking
questions and eager to know how the HELB portal works and more of information about it. And
they immediately starts to apply after knowing what it entails
This achievement in this method can also be measure when you encourage students by
convincing them to volunteer to donate blood to other people stating the importance of blood
donation which includes saving people’s lives, improving your body’s immunity because more
blood cells will be generated to replace the donated blood, being able to know your blood group
and your health conditions like blood pressure, rhesus level and underlying conditions like
hepatitis B. the next thing they will do is to find the nearest blood transfusion center and donate
blood and you will have achieved your measure when they are convinced to do so.
Persuade learners to stop using drug abuse by showing them the impacts of drugs on their health,
its effects of addiction, and effects to the people around among others. Theywill be convinced
and get scared to be engaged in drug abuse. Their response of refraining from drug abuse
achieves your persuasion for the goal of discontinuance.
Learners can also be persuaded to stay away from bad companies because of peer influence to do
illegal things like stealing, smoking, robbery and immoral behaviors. This brings an attitude of
refraining and staying away from those groups and by doing so reveals the measure of
discontinuance persuasion goal.
This goal can be measured in class when we encourage students to work hard in their studies,
therefore keep insisting the students to keep reading their work and keeping in mind what they
have learned in class, the students will have no choice but to follow what they have been told and
the results that they obtain from their evaluation can tell that indeed they kept what they were
told to do during their study.
Students can who participate in extracurricular activities can be persuaded to continue involving
themselves in those activities and as a result they will end up with being awarded the certificate
of participation, this shows the acceptance of what they were told to do hence demonstrating
continuance persuasion goal.
Deterrence persuasion
Persuade the students to demonstrate their acceptance of values bye enquiring if they engage
themselves in drug abuse, the measure of this goal of persuasion can be observed by the way the
students will respond to the question that has been asked and hence you can be in a position to
convince them to keep away from drug abuse if they have never engaged themselves in it.
Learners can also be asked if they have ever been arrested by the police for engaging in any
criminal or illegal activities, their reaction shows the measure of their experience of whether they
have ever been arrested or not therefore encourage and persuade them that they should not
engage themselves in such illegal activities and by doing so portrays the measure of deterrence
persuasion goal.
