This document describes an innovative product called E-SMART 2.0, which is a portable smart bin designed to help the public dispose of electronic waste (e-waste) in an environmentally responsible way. Research found most students lacked awareness of proper e-waste disposal and its impacts. E-SMART 2.0 aims to educate the public and provide a convenient recycling option with rewards to encourage participation. The bin is portable, has an interface to display pricing and advertisements, and will give cash rewards for e-waste. E-SMART 2.0 won awards for its innovation and has potential to support sustainable development goals by promoting better e-waste management.

ABSTRACT
Under Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), E-waste is
recognized as a global problem. It was reported that Malaysians as a whole produce over than
365,000 tonnes of electronic garbage each and every year. Malaysia is not alone in this
regard; other countries also produce similar amounts. The manner in which this electronic
garbage was managed and disposed of is a major cause for concern because many Malaysians
are reportedly uninformed of the ways in which E-waste can be disposed of. Based on the
issue, we innovate a product known as E-SMART 2.0. This is a portable smart bin that will
make it easier for the public to dispose of and sort their e-waste in an environmentally
responsible manner. This innovation product may be utilised by numerous stakeholders such
as government agencies, the local authorities, private sector, or other responsible parties in
waste management to educate members of the general public to be aware of how to dispose
of their e-waste in a sustainable manner. According to the social exchange theory, each item
of e-waste will be rewarded with cash, and the purpose of this incentive is to encourage our
public to dispose of their e-waste. This bin is portable and can be placed in public areas as
well as at events open to the public. It is sustainable, safe, and friendly to the environment,
and it has the potential to promote SDG11, which focuses on sustainable cities and
communities.

INTRODUCTION

Globally, electronic waste or E-waste becomes a significant concern. With the advent of
technology, industries have pushed toward more automation, which has led to an increase in
the use of electrical and electronic equipment. Electrical and electronic devices have grown
prominent in the average consumer's daily life, as they are commonly employed in
manufacturing and other industries. (Kumar. A, et al., 2017). Electronic waste is comprised
of precious materials that, if recycled, can be sold for a profit. Sadly, the bulk of e-waste is
recycled in the uncontrolled informal sector, which poses a considerable danger of harmful
exposure to recyclers, who are typically women and children. (N. Perkins et al., 2014). In
Malaysia, to be exact in Universiti Teknologi MARA, according to the findings of research
that was carried out by our group, the vast majority of our students have limited
understanding regarding the on how to dispose of electronic waste in an appropriate manner
and the impacts of e-waste on environment. The percentage of learners who are familiar with
e-waste is depicted in Chart 1 and Chart 2 from our research.

Chart 1 : Percentage of students on how to dispose e-wate in proper manner

Chart 2 : Percentage of students on the impacts of e-waste towards environment

Our groups have also come across the idea that students ought to be the driving force behind
environmental preservation efforts in their communities in order to cultivate ideals of
sustainable communities. On the other hand, they are ignorant. (Refer Chart 1 and Chart 2).
Therefore, E-waste management is important in this modern era. As we all know, E-waste is
related to SDG 11. Since, E-waste is recognised as a global problem, we innovate a product
known as E-SMART 2.0. This is a portable smart bin that will make it easier for the public to
dispose of and sort their e-waste in an environmentally responsible manner.

OBJECTIVE

The objectives of this product are :

a) To educate the public on managing e-waste in a sustainable way.
b) To provide convenient way of disposing e-waste that could be easily available
throughout public spaces.
c) To encourage the public to dispose of e-waste by giving rewards.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PRODUCT

i. Features:
This product was named E-SMART 2.0 with the following description :
a) E : Represent electronic which refers to e-waste.
b) S : Represent size whereby the product size is not too big which suitable for
small e-waste items.
c) M : Represent movable in which the bin is portable and can be stationed at any
public spaces.
d) A : Represent attractive with vibrant colour and SDG Logo.
e) R : Represent reward whereby trade our e-waste with cash.
f) T: Represent traceable in which the bin has tracking system.

E-SMART 2.0 bin has attractive interface on the display screen :

a) Price rate – The price rate of every electronic item will be listed and
displayed.
b) Advertisement – Environmental advertisement will be displayed to educate
the public.
c) Fun Facts – It gives facts about advantages of recycling and e-waste disposal.

ii. Functionality:

E-SMART is an easily accessible tool that provides bin for the public to dispose their e-
waste in an appropriate manner without harming the environment. This sustainable bin
will give cash as reward of disposing e-waste to encourage the society. It will also
educate the public by advertise the impacts of e-waste and the condition of the
environment as well as the world if e-waste is not manageable.

Usefulness : The public will have no trouble operating this product, as the interface is
simple and straightforward.
Practicality : This product is convenient for use because it functions similarly to
technological equipment and is conveniently accessible.

NOVELTY

There are not many facilities for the management of electronic waste in the general public
space. This electronic waste bin is portable, has a practical design, and is appropriate for
placement in public places or public spaces. The process of separating electronic waste,
particularly small items, from other types of waste is simplified for the general public.

AWARDS

During the initial stage of the project, it achieved success and recognition in the field of
innovation by winning various awards. For instance, E-SMART 2.0 received a bronze award
at the Invention Innovation & Design Exposition (IIDEX 2022) organized by the Universiti
Teknologi MARA (UiTM). Additionally, the project was also awarded the gold medal in the
Student Invention & Innovation Competition (SIITC 2022) by the Faculty of Administrative
Science and Policy Studies in the same year.

CONCLUSION

Nowadays, people all over the world are starting to worry more and more about electronic
waste. Recycling of electronic waste is important, but it must be done in a standardised and
secure way. Therefore, the E-SMART bin is the public's new and long-term solution. Each
item will be rewarded with money. Young people will be more likely to properly dispose of
their electronic waste if they are offered incentives to do so. Local governments may be
persuaded to adopt the use of an electronic waste bin. Investment in these eco-friendly
solutions is welcome from waste management corporations, government organisations, and
private businesses.
