My friend Juana lives in Pulilan, where carabao festival is cele-

lesson.
Read the short story below. Critique the story applying what has been learned

The Happiest Boy in the World by NVM Gonzalez

Julio, who had come from Tablas to settle in Barok, was

writing a letter, of all people, Ka Ponso, his landlord, one warm
June night. It was about his son, Jose, who wanted to go to
school in Mansalay that year. Jose was in fifth grade when
Julio and his family had left Tablas the year before and
migrated to Mindoro; because the father had some difficulty in
getting some land of his own to farm, the boy had to stop
schooling for a year. As it was, Julio thought himself lucky
enough to have Ka Ponso take him on as tenant. Later, when
Julio's wife Fidela gave birth to a baby, Ka Ponso, who
happened to be visiting his property then, offered to become
its godfather. After that, they began to call each other
compadre.

 "Dear Compadre," Julio started to write in Tagalog, bending earnestly over a
piece of paper which he had torn out of Jose's school notebook. It was many
months ago, when, just as now, he had sat down with a writing implement in
his hand.

That was when he had gone to the municipio in Mansalay to

file a homestead application, and he had used a pen, and to
his great surprise, filled in the blank forms neatly. Nothing
came of the application, although Ka Ponso had assured him,
he had looked into the matter and talked with the officials con-
cerned. Now, with a pencil instead of a pen to write with, Julio
was sure that he could make his letter legible enough for Ka
Ponso.

"It's about my boy, Jose." he wrote on. "I want him to study
this June in Mansalay. He's in the sixth grade now, and since
he's quite a poor hand at looking after your carabaos,
I thought it would be best that he goes to school in the town."
...The kerosene lamp's yellow flame flickered ceaselessly. The
drank smell of food, fish broth, particularly, that had been
spilled from many a bowl and had dried on the form, now
seemed to rise from the very texture of the wood itself.
The stark truth about their poverty…

""This boy, Jose, compadre," he went on, "is quite an

industrious lad. If you can only let him stay in your big house,
compadre, you can make him do anything you wish--any work.
He can cook rice, and I'm sure he'll wash the dishes."
..."I hope you will not think of this as a great bother," Julio
continued, trying his best to phrase his thoughts. He had a
vague fear that Ka Ponso might not favorably regard his letter.
But he wrote on, slowly and steadily, stopping only to read
what he had put down. "We shall repay you for whatever you
can do for us, compadre. It's true we already owe you for
many things, but your comadre and I will do all we can indeed
to repay you."

 ...Suddenly he began wondering how Jose would move about in Ka Ponso's
household, being unaccustomed to so many things there. The boy might even
stumble over a chair and break some dishes...He feared for the boy.

...Julio felt he had nothing more to say, and that he had written
the longest letter in his life... He sat back again and smiled to
himself. About six o'clock the following morning, a boy of
twelve was riding a carabao along the river-bed road to town.
He was very puny load on carabao's broad back.
Walking close behind the carabao, the father did not cross the
stream but only stood there by the bank. "Mind to look after
the letter," he called out from where he was. "Do you have it
there, in your shirt pocket?” The boy fumbled for it. When he
had found it, he said, “No, Tatay, I won’t lose it.”
…Then Julio started to walk back to his house, thinking of the
world that awaited him in his clearing that day...
...Jose grew suddenly curious about the letter he carried in his
shirt pocket. He stopped his carabao under a shady tree by
the roadside. A bird sang in a bush nearby. Jose could hear it
even as he read the letter, jumping from word to word, for him
the dialect was quite difficult. But as the meaning of each sen-
tence became clear to him, he experienced a curious exulta-
tion. It was as though he were the happiest boy in the world
and that the bird was singing for him. He heard the rumbling of
the stream faraway. There he and his father had parted. The
world seemed full of bird song and music from the stream.

 Tone

Tone is a quality in the voice that expresses the speaker's feelings or thoughts,
often toward the person being spoken to.
Contraction changes the tone from formal to informal tone.

Another measure of the formality of tone is the use of casual forms of speech,
such as the slang we might use in an email conversation with a close friend:

Fluency

Fluency is the quality or condition of being fluent. The ability to speak or write
a foreign language easily and accurately. It is the ability to speak or write a foreign

Types of fluency

1. Reading fluency refers to the link between the recognition of words while
reading and reading comprehension manifests itself in the speed and
accuracy that one is able to read a text.

2. Oral fluency or speaking fluency is a measurement both of production and

reception of speech, as a fluent speaker must be able to understand and
respond to others in conversation.

3. Oral reading fluency refers to the ability to read words accurately and quickly
while using good vocal expression and phrasing.

4. Written or compositional fluency can be measured by length of

the composition (especially under timed conditions), words
produced per minute, sentence length, or words per clause.

 Cohesion

Cohesion is the grammatical and lexical linking within a text or sentence that
holds a text together and gives it meaning. It is related to the broader concept
of coherence.

Cohesive Devices or linking words are generally used to convey the ideas of:

1. Addition - and, also, besides, moreover, in addition, in addition to

2. Contrast - despite, but, however, yet, still, though
3. Choice - or, either…or, neither…nor
4. Purpose - so that
5. Result/effect - consequently, so, therefore, thus
6. Cause/reason/consequence - because, as, since, for

Correctness is the notion that certain words, word forms,

Rules of Grammar

Coordinating conjunctions are easy to remember with an acronymic mnemonic

• Use apostrophes correctly.

• Know where to place quotation marks.
• Know how to punctuate with parentheses.
• Use a hyphen for compound adjectives.
• Distinguish between the colon and the semicolon.
• Avoid multiple punctuation at the end of a sentence.
• Use a colon to introduce a list only when the introductory text is a complete
sentence.
• Use commas to indicate non-essential information.
• Use a dictionary.

The Philippines is Beautiful

The Philippines is an archipelago. Located over the Philippine Trench, a plate

tectonic boundary which forms part of the Ring of Fire. It is bounded on the east by
the Pacific Ocean, on the south by the Celebes Sea, and on the west by the South
China Sea. The archipelagic state comprises about 7,107 islands. Resulting from
this situation are great variations in climate, geography and vegetation. Also, the
Philippines supports a rich and varied flora with close botanical connections to
Indonesia and mainland Southeast Asia. The diverse flora includes 8,000 species
of flowering plants, 1,000 kinds of ferns and 800 species of orchids. Philippines is
also rich in fauna. There are over 150 species of mammals which are unique and
can only be found here in the Philippines. Some examples are the Tamaraw of
Mindoro, Pilandok of Palawan and many more.

We, Filipinos, are known to be hospitable and that we value our families a lot.
A typical Filipino family is known for their close ties. Their relationship with each
other is so close that they almost do not want to be apart from each other. That is
why it is common to them having extended families. The lolo, lola and some titas
and titos stay with the family. They also love doing things together. They eat
together, pray together and they also love celebrating special occasions like birth-
days and Christmas together. Every member of the family is helping for the good of
their family. Usually, the father provides income to the family while the mother stays
at home to do the chores and tend to the kids. Filipinos are the best people when it
comes to family matters.

Filipino Culture is very influenced by the Spanish conquest. Many of the

traditions of the Philippines are actually Spanish traditions. The Philippines is also a
well-known Christian country. Majority of the population are Catholics, a religion
that came from Spain. Even the celebration of fiesta is influenced by the Spanish.
Most provinces have their own identifying folk dances, too, wherein they showcase
the elegance and beauty of the way they do things like the way they dress as we
have been influenced by events that happened in our past. Our colorful and lively
culture makes us distinct Filipino. The Philippines is the most unique country when
it comes to culture because of the blending cultures from Europe and America.

This I Believe by Carlos P. Romulo

I believe above all that a man should be true to himself. I believe a man should
be prepared at all times to sacrifice everything for his convictions. Twice during my
life, I have been called upon to make this kind of sacrifice. After Pearl Harbor, the
Philippines was invaded by Japan. I had never been a soldier. I was a journalist.
But something impelled me to enlist.
I was attached to General Macarthur’s staff and went with him first to Bataan
and later to Corregidor. In Corregidor, I was placed in charge of the broadcast
called the Voice of Freedom. The Japanese reacted violently to the broadcast.
I learned that a prize had been put on my head, and worse that they had gone after
my wife and four sons who had been left behind in the occupied territory. I suffered
indescribable torment, worrying about my loved ones. I wanted to go back to Manila
at whatever cost. But I was ordered to proceed to Australia on the eve of the fall of
Bataan.
From Australia, I was sent on to the United States, where I continued to make
the Voice of Freedom heard, regardless of the consequences to my family. I did not
see them again until after the liberation of my country by the American forces under
General Macarthur, aided by the Filipino guerillas who had carried on a vigorous
resistance during the more than three years of enemy occupation.
The second time I was called upon to make a considerable sacrifice for my
convictions was during the 1953 national elections in the Philippines. I had never
been a politician, but having become convinced that I should do everything I could
to help effect a change of government in my country, I resigned as Ambassador to
the United States and permanent representative to the United Nations in order to
enter the field against the incumbent president. I founded a third party, the
Democratic Party, and accepted the nomination for president—started a vigorous
campaign to awaken the Filipino people to the need for a change in administration.

 Midway in the campaign, it became apparent that the two opposition parties
might lose the election if they remained divided, but had an excellent chance to win
if they would present a united front. I made the painful decision to withdraw my
candidacy. After withdrawing my own candidacy, I was the campaign manager of
Mr. Ramón Magsaysay and campaigned up and down the land for him. I could not
have worked harder if I had been the candidate myself.
Magsaysay won by a landslide. The temptation was strong for all those who
had worked for him to share in the rewards of victory. I was convinced, however,
that the first duty of everyone who had helped to bring about a change of
government was to give the new president a completely free hand in making
appointments to keep positions in his administration. Immediately after the
elections, I left for the United States.
As I look back, I see this pattern of action and renunciation repeated over and
over again in my life—in things great and small, in war and in peace. Some may call
this a credo of self-sacrifice. I prefer to describe it as being true to one’s self, no
matter what the cost.

Challenges are inevitable in life. We must always be strong enough to face them and find
ways to address them. I believe that first, we must always be optimistic. No matter how difficult the
situation is, never think of negative things. Second, appreciate simple things in life. Always be
grateful to the Lord for all the blessings He endows. Third, let failures serve as lessons and make
them as guide for your next decisions, thus, do not let disappointments discourage you. Most
