This document presents a study on the design and analysis of a pedal-operated drying machine as a sustainable alternative for drying clothes. The study aims to calculate the amount of water lost from wet clothes using this drying method, determine the drying time, and specify the design of the machine. The pedal-powered drying machine uses a bicycle pedal connected to a pulley and drum to dry clothes without needing electricity. This design provides a potential solution for drying clothing faster during power outages or rainy seasons, especially in areas impacted by electricity shortages.

Introduction

In recent years, the study of drying clothes has focused on the process

of removing moisture from fabric after it has been washed. Drying clothes may

be done in a variety of ways, including air drying, line drying, and machine

drying. Each technique has advantages and disadvantages, and the method

chosen can be influenced by a variety of factors like as season, available

space, and fabric type (Palamanit et al., 2019). For centuries, drying clothes

has been an essential part of laundry procedures, with many techniques of

drying textiles utilized over time.Clothes were usually dried by putting them

with outside clotheslines, putting them on solid surfaces, or using dryer racks.

Before the early 20th century, the most prevalent techniques of drying

garments were air-drying and line-drying. However, the first electric clothes

dryer was introduced in the United States in 1938, and it quickly gained

popularity due to its convenience and time-saving benefits. Since then,

clothes dryers have become a ubiquitous appliance in many households

around the world, and they are available in a variety of models, sizes, and

styles (Heidner et al., 2017).

From its creation in the 19th century, the bicycle has appealed to

succeeding generations of children and adults, and it has recreated itself

through find new markets all over the world. It encourages historical and pass

connections as a recognizable and continuous kind of worldwide daily

technology (Smethurst, P. 2015). Bicycles are the primary mode of mobility in

communities. In towns where most cyclists travel, the power may be used to

run electrical devices that demand less capacity (Suhalka et al., 2015). A
bicycle is a small vehicle with two wheels attached to each other, pedals,

handles, and a riding seat that allow it to go.

According to Bigham et al. (2021), the gas dryers can be

instantaneous in drying clothes. To examine the drying performance of the

unique concept used in a gas garments dryer usage, a thorough quasi-

steady-state thermal model was built. Transient temperatures, pressure,

moisture evaporation, and CEF variations supplied meaningful data on the

dryer system's rapid responsiveness. It was discovered that the instantaneous

water loss % and CEF/SMER are optimal at a moderate RMC intensity. The

energy loss and consumption of the clothes dryer have been the subject of

numerous research. Electric heaters consume the majority of the dryer's

electricity (Songyang et al., 2017). However, the main topic of this study is a

new design that uses a bicycle pedal with a pulley and drum as an alternative

dryer that doesn’t need electricity to function. This study aimed to calculate

the amount of water lost on wet clothes after a particular drying process,

determine the time it would take to dry clothes (Mogaji et al., 2020), and to

determine the specifications of the alternative dryer. The study was carried

out to assist households in having an alternate dryer that they may use to dry

their clothing faster when there is a brownout and it is raining.

This study design and development of a pedal-operated drying

machine as a sustainable solution for drying clothes, particularly during the

rainy season and in areas with an electricity shortage. This research will first

describe the pedal operated drying machine and then make the drying

machine that can be the alternative dryer, especially in places with limited

energy and during rainy season. The purpose of this study is not to replace
the other type of dryer, but rather to make an alternative dryer such as pedal

operated drying machine. This study applies and expands on those ideas, and

it is based on a research investigation of (Niyigema et al., 2020).This study

offers new proposal that can contribute to the existing literature and provide

evidence on the potential of pedal-operated drying machines as a sustainable

alternative to traditional electric dryers, particularly in areas with an electricity

shortage or during the rainy season.
