I. CONCEPT NOTE
A. MOLE FRACTION
Mole fraction of solute is defined as the mole ratio between solute and solution while mole fraction
of solvent is the mole ratio between solvent and solution.
= =
= mole of solute = mole fraction of solute
= mole of solvent = mole fraction of solvent
= = = 0.308
= = = 0.490
To check the total mole fraction of solution
= + + = 0.202 + 0.308 + 0.490 = 1
Example # 2. MASS OF SOLUTE (g) AND VOLUME OF SOLVENT (L)
Potassium Iodide, KI, 176.5 g is added to 1.5L of water. Calculate the mole fraction of each
compound in a solution. Density of water 1 g/ml.
Given: mass of solute= 176.5 g
mass of solvent =1.5L = 1500 mL = 1500 g
density of water = 1 g/mL
Unknown: - mole fraction of KI
– mole fraction of H20
Solution:
Conversion of mass to mole, use the MM= molar mass
MM: KI = K: 1 x 39.1 = 39.1
I: 1 x 126.9 = 126.9
166
MM: H2O = H: 2 x 1.01 = 2.02
O: 1 x 16 = 16
18.02
= = = 0.987
