Trip to Hongkong February 3 Rizal left the Philippines half-sick and 1888 disillusion. Carried by Zafiro, it arrived in Amoy (Xiamen), China but Rizal did not land because of his frail health. While in Hongkong Rizal met Jose Ma. Basa, Balbino Maurico, and Maurico Yriarte who were former exiles from the Philippines because of the events in 1972. Visit to Macao February 18, Rizal and Basa went to Macao, carried by the 1888 vessel Kiu-Kiang. Rizal stayed from February 18–20. Rizal left February 22, Rizal left Hongkong on board the Oceanic. Hongkong 1888 Arrived at February 28 Rizal arrived at Yokohama on Feb. 28. He Yokohama 1888 stayed at the Grand Hotel. Tokyo March 2–7, After his arrival at Yokohama he went to Tokyo 1888 and stayed for a week, starting from March 2 to 7. Later he moved over the Spanish legation on invitation of its secretary, Juan Perez Caballero. He accepted the invitation since staying with the Spaniards would save him money and he believed that he had nothing to hide from them. Rizal was impressed of Japan’s culture, atmosphere, and people. He said that Japanese are industrious and happy people. Rizal met O-Sei-San (Usui Seiko). This lady taught him different Japanese words, became his tour guide in different shrines and villages, interpreter, and tutor. Later became Rizal’s lover but Rizal left her to fulfill his required travel to Spain. Arrived at San April 28, 1888 He then arrived at San Francisco on April 28, Francisco 1888. He defined America as “A motherland for the poor who wish to work.” He described America as a great country, with too many defects, and that they do not have a real civil liberty. When asked by Jose Alejandro about his impression of the country, he said: America is the land par excellence of freedom but only for the whites. In fact, Rizal experienced discrimination upon his arrival for many of them weren’t allowed to disembark, and Chinese passengers were even quarantined much longer on board. Oakland May 6, 1888 Rizal visited Oakland and ate super in Sacramento. The next day he took breakfast at Reno, Nevada the “Biggest Little City in the World”. May 7 to 11, Rizal visited the states of Utah, Colorado, 1888 Nebraska, Illinois (Chicago), and New York where he saw the Niagara Falls. Arrived in New May 13, 1888 Rizal arrived in New York on May 13, 1888, York and called New York the Big Town. In London May 1888 to Rizal decided to stay and lived in London from March 1889 May 1888 to March 1889 for three reasons: 1. To improve his knowledge on English 2. To study Dr. Antonio de Morga’s book Succesos De Las Islas Filipinas, which was found in British Museum. 3. London was safe from the Spaniards. Rizal worked in the British Museum Library, studied, copied, and published Morga’s book. He became good friends with Dr. Reinhold Rost because of his linguistic excellence. Rost was then impressed by Rizal’s manners and called him “Una Perla De Hombre” or “Pearl of a Man”. He stayed as a guest of Dr. Antonio Ma. Regidor. Rizal moved to a boarding house owned by the Beckett family. Rizal and Gertude Becket became lovers. Gertude helped Pettie, Rizal’s nickname for Gertude, in mixing colors for painting, and assisted him in preparing the clay sculpturing. But on March 18, 1889, Rizal bade goodbye to his lover and left London for Paris. Rizal wrote a pamphlet against Fray Rodriguez entitled “La Vision Del Fray Rodriguez”. He even wrote two other works entitled “Letter to the Young Women of Malolos”, and “Specimen of tagal Folklore and Two Eastern Fables”. Paris, France May 6, 1889 Rizal transferred from different hotels and boarding houses because there are too many tourists in the city, he stayed with Valentin Ventura. He visited the home of Padro de Tavera. He wrote the story of the Monkey and the Tortoise. He was fascinated by the Universal exposition, especially the Eiffel Tower. He organized the Kidlat Club, with Filipinos who wanted to join the expo. He finalized his copy of Morga’s book which showed evidence that Filipinos were already civilized before the Spaniards came. He wrote a satire entitled Pro Telefono, as a reply to Fr. Salvador Font, his slanderer. Madrid, Spain He became the honorary president of the patriotic society, “Associacion La Solidaridad” Biarritz, France February 1891 Rizal wanted to take a rest from carrying his problems. Rizal fell in love with Nellie, one of the daughters of Mr. Boustead as he saw this girl like a real Filipina, intelligent and cheerful. He stayed in Biarritz for a month and finishes El Filibusterismo on March 29, 1891. Then the next day, Rizal bade farewell to the Boustead family and proceeded to Paris via train. He retired from the Propaganda movement and wanted to focus on publishing El Fili and his medical profession. He was choosing to settle on either Philippines, Hongkong, or Japan since Europe seemed a banishment to him due to the conflict in La Solidaridad. The Return to Manila
