Funded Ph.D.

Student Position at University of Wyoming, Department of Petroleum Engineering,

Spring 2023

University of Wyoming Petroleum Engineering Department is accepting applications for a funded Ph.D.
student as early as Spring 2023. The project, which is funded by the Windings Electromagnetic Solutions,
is expected to evaluate the design aspects and application ranges of the electric motors developed by
Windings compared with other commercial motors used for oil and gas drilling.

Windings Business: As a full-service provider, Windings is a leader in the design, test, manufacture, and
support of custom electric motors, generators, and related components including rotors, stators, lamination
stacks, and insulation systems. Windings has developed the technology to use ePTFE magnet wire in
electric motors as a direct replacement to polyimide magnet wire (NEMA 1000, MW16C or MW35C) for
two main reasons. The first is because Gore magnet wire is rated for 260C while others are rated for 240
and 200, respectively. The second is because Gore wire is resistant to hydrolysis, which we believe solves
a real industry problem. The idea is to use these traits not only to increase the durability of electric motors
but also to allow them to operate in conditions where others previously could not, while maintaining
durability. Windings have performed limited testing which compares the two types of motors as seen in
their product literature ( https://windings.com/focus-industries/oil-gas/duracore-series-motors/) and on
their website (www.windings.com) demonstrating that motors wired with polyimide are prone to failure
under test conditions while ePTFE is not. More information about magnet wire also available from WL
Gore https://www.gore.com/products/magnet-wires.

Requirements: The applicant is expected to have a Master degree in any Engineering degree, preferably,
Petroleum, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering with past working experiences in the design, fabrication
or manufacturing of electric motor or similar products. Basic knowledge of oil and gas drilling operation is
highly desired. Past related industry experiences will be considered favorably. The project involves
experimental work, numerical modelling and analytical calculations. The student may be expected to work
at the Windings premises when is needed.

Application Process: All applicants should submit their Ph.D. application in Petroleum Engineering
online through the University of Wyoming application system and meet the admission requirements. For
any questions and submission of the CVs for initial evaluation, please contact Dr. Vamegh Rasouli
at vrasouli@uwyo.edu. Applications are considered until the position is filled.

Funding Condition: The tuition and 12-month stipend per year for max of 3 years will be covered based
on the standard rate at the Department of Petroleum Engineering. Continuation of the funding is subjected
to the funding availability and the satisfactory academic performance and is evaluated by the advisor.
