A copy of the course lecture guide is at the end of this book. It includes many of the lecture presentations for this course. It can also be downloaded in Adobe Acrobat format from the student website. Internet accessible materials. All instructional materials for this course can be found at http://classroom.chemistry.uakron.edu/. Instructions for accessing the classroom site are provided on the next page. If you have trouble accessing that area, email me, providing the username and password you are trying to use. Email/phone calls. Any questions you have can be emailed to me with a couple of limitations. I will only answer email coming from your official University of Akron email address. I will not answer email that requests the date of exams and/or makeup tests. That information will only be given in class. The same is true when it comes to phone calls. Also, please do not leave messages asking me to call you, as I will not return phone calls. These limitations are in place not only to encourage class attendance but to protect your privacy. Also, various State laws and University policies forbid discussions with third parties. Testing. Three multiple choice examinations. These will be given at regular intervals (one exam per four chapters) and will be at least 40 questions in length. For the first two exams, each will be announced one week in advance during the Fall or two days in advance during the summer. The third exam will be given the last day of class and the makeup well be given on Monday of the following week at 7:00 AM (You must bring your excuse at that time.) You may bring a calculator for your use and a periodic table similar to what is in the Lecture Guide will also be provided. As computer grading will be used, you must bring two #2 pencils to each exam. All copies of each exam must be returned by the end of the test period, however you will be provided with a copy of your computer graded results. You can pick these up at KNCL 314 (bring your ID card). These results will also be posted on the web site. You should check this list to insure that your grade has been correctly recorded. Quizzes. You are required to take 12 quizzes on-line -one for each chapter. Each quiz will consist of 10 questions and will be posted on groups of 4 chapters. They will be automatically taken offline at approximately 4 AM on the day of the review (the lecture period before the test). I will provide answers to quiz questions during the review. You must have taken all quizzes by then and there will be no exceptions. You are permitted, in fact encouraged to work with other students, your book, lecture guide and other resources when taking the quizzes. Grading. The overall score will be determined as follows: Each exam is worth 30% of your grade and quizzes are worth a total of 10%. The quiz total is based on two factors the number of quizzes actually taken and the total number of quiz points. You final score will be calculated using the following equation: Score = (exam 1 + exam 2 + exam 3) * 0.75 + (# quizzes taken/12) * 5 + (total quiz points/120) * 5 A final grade will be assigned based on the scale listed below. No + or -grades will be used. In addition, your final score will be rounded up to the nearest whole number. This means that I will round up a 69.01 to a 70. A common question immediately following the 2nd exam it What do I need to get on Exam 3 to receive a grade of XX? An Excel spreadsheet is provided to allow you to calculate what you need. Cutoff (Grade) 90 (A) 80 (B) 70 (C) 60 (D) <60 (F)
NOTE: While the web site provides grade/score information but the ONLY accurate method is the one listed above. Makeup. Makeup exams will be offered for an acceptable documented excuse. This requires that you provide documentation that proves you were unable to attend class on that day. Examples of acceptable documentation include: a note from a doctor, accident report, court summons. Unacceptable excuses include: a note from your parent or an obituary notice. Only a single makeup will be scheduled at my convenience. The time will be announced in class and on the course website. In the case of student athletes, you must provide me with a copy of your form showing you have a sporting event conflict. It is to be giving to me on the lecture after the test at the start of class. Cheating. All incidences of cheating will be handled according to current Departmental and University policies. Each case will be pursued to the fullest extent. Extra Credit. There is none, so please dont ask.
