Foreword
This South African standard was prepared by National Committee SABS/TC 1098, Buildings and
civil engineering works, in accordance with procedures of the South African Bureau of Standards, in
compliance with annex 3 of the WTO/TBT agreement.

This document was approved for publication in December 2018.

This document supersedes SANS 2001-CG1:2007 (edition 1).

Construction works.

Introduction
The different parts of SANS 2001 each address a specific component of construction works. The
prime purpose in the production of these standards is to create a set of standards that are generally
applicable to construction works, and which can be readily modified to make them applicable to
particular works.

The SANS 2001 family of standards provides technical descriptions of the standard of materials and
workmanship that will be used in the works that are executed or in the performance of the works
when completed (or both). These standards do not make reference to the actions of those
responsible for executing the works or the parties to a contract, i.e. to the constraints relating to the
manner in which contract work is to be performed. Neither do they deal with the commercial
arrangements of such contracts. These standards are suitable for use in any "in-house"
construction work or in all types of engineering and construction works contracts, for example,
design by employer, design and build, develop and construct, construction management or
management contracts.

Standard requirements pertaining to the manner in which works are constructed can be found in the
SANS 1921 family of standards.

1 Scope
This part of SANS 2001 covers the installation of glass and polycarbonate panes supported in
frames.

3 Definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following definitions apply.

back putty
portion of the glazing compound that remains between the back of the rebate and the glazing
material after the glazing material has been pressed into position

bedding putty
glazing compound in the rebate into which the glazing material is bedded

distance piece
spacer which maintains the distance between the glass and frame/glazing beads

front putty
fillet of glazing compound formed on the platform of the rebate in front of and in contact with the
glazing material

3.5
location block
spacer which ensures that there is sufficient side clearance between the glass and door jambs or
frames of pivoted, sliding or hinged windows (see figure 1)

pane
piece of glazing material cut to the size and shape required for glazing

3.7
setting block
spacer which supports the glass and ensures that there is sufficient bottom clearance between the
glass and the supporting frame (see figure 1)

4 Requirements
4.1 Materials

4.1.1 Glazing material

4.1.1.1 Glazing material shall comprise either glass that complies with the requirements of
SANS 50572-1 to SANS 50572-5 and SANS 1263-1, or polycarbonate sheeting.

4.1.1.2 The type and thickness of the panes shall be as shown in the drawings or indicated in the
specification data (see annex A).

4.1.2 General purpose putty

Putty shall comply with the requirements of SANS 680.

4.1.3 Bedding and sealing materials

Flexible compounds, sealants, and preformed strip materials shall be of a suitable quality, and
compatible with other materials with which they come into contact for the envisaged application.

4.1.4 Setting blocks

Setting blocks shall be rot-proof, non-absorbent and capable of maintaining the requisite edge
clearance without presenting local areas of stress to the glass.

NOTE Sealed hardwood or PVC is suitable material for blocks.

4.1.5 Frames

Frames shall be as shown in the drawings or in accordance with the provisions of the specification
data.

4.2 Preparation

4.2.1 Before commencing glazing operations, it shall be confirmed that

a) the fixing of the frame has been completed,

b) protective coatings or tapes have been removed from the frames,

c) rebates are free from obstructions and debris,

d) timber frames and concrete frames are free from excessive moisture content, and

e) all surfaces which are to come into contact with the bedding material have been primed or
sealed.

4.2.2 The surfaces, which will come into contact with glazing materials, shall be cleaned and dried.
All contaminants and any protective tape shall be removed.

4.2.3 All metal frames shall, before glazing, be painted with an anti-corrosive primer. Wooden
frames shall be primed with a primer that complies with the requirements of SANS 678.

4.2.4 Where pane areas exceed 0,3 m2, the glass shall be placed on one or two setting blocks
along the bottom edge (see figure 1). Setting blocks shall be between 25 mm and 75 mm long,
except at the bottom bar of vertically pivoted windows where a single block of length at least
150 mm is sufficient.

4.2.5 Glass sheets shall be checked for edge clearances which shall be not less than

a) 3 mm for glass of length or width up to 2 m, and

b) 5 mm for glass of length or width over 2 m.

4.2.6 Distance pieces shall be placed on opposite sides of the sheet at centres that do not
exceed 300 mm, within 50 mm of corners and at bead fixing points.

4.3 Fixing timber beads

Timber beads shall be fixed at maximum centres of 300 mm and within 50 mm of corners when
screwed, and shall be fixed at maximum centres of 150 mm and within 50 mm of corners when
pinned.

4.4 Glazing with putty

4.4.1 Sufficient bedding putty shall be applied to the rebate to ensure that when the glazing
material is pressed into position, the putty is squeezed out around the entire perimeter of the
glazing rebate.

4.4.2 The glass shall be so positioned that an even bearing is obtained and edge clearances are
equal all the way round the pane. The pane shall thereafter be pressed and bedded into the
bedding putty until it is at least 3 mm from the back surface of the rebate.

4.4.3 In wooden surrounds, sprigs in the frame shall be secured against the face of the glass at
approximately 300 mm centres.

4.4.4 The front putty shall thereafter be applied and finished off to a splayed finish. The back putty
shall be trimmed and finished off to a smooth finish.

4.4.5 Upon completion, the putty shall be brushed lightly with a small brush to seal the edges
against the glass and the surround.

4.5 Glazing with materials other than putty

4.5.1 Flexible compounds, sealants, adhesive strip materials, preformed compression gaskets and
the like (as shown in figure 2) shall be used strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s
instructions.

4.5.2 Flexible compounds and sealant cappings shall be finished off at an angle to shed water (see
figure 2).

4.5.3 Patent glazing systems shall be used strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s
instructions.

NOTE Patent glazing systems are proprietary systems in which the glazing material is dry glazed with
provisions for self-drainage. Typically, the bars are made from aluminium alloy.
