“What are the variables that affect the acceleration of an object?”
 Allow students to share their thoughts and experiences related to the question.

Explain that today's lesson will focus on understanding Newton's 2nd Law of Motion, which
explains the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration.

Let the students read the objective of the lesson

Explain each of Newton’s three laws of motion (S11/12PS-IVd-50)
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
a. state Newton's 2nd Law of Motion;
b. appreciate the importance of Newton's 2nd Law of Motion in our daily life;
c. solve problems involving Newton's 2nd Law of Motion.
C. Presenting examples/instances of the new Explore
lesson For the students to observe the second law of motion under idealized condition, the students will
explore the following simulation:

University of Colorado Boulder. 2019. ‘Forces and Motion’. Last Accessed: 15 August 2019:
Forces and Motion: Basics (colorado.edu)

Guide Questions:
1. What is the relationship between force and acceleration according to the law of
acceleration?
 According to the law of acceleration, the acceleration of an object is directly proportional to
the net force applied to it. In other words, as the force increases, the acceleration also
increases, and vice versa.
2. Using the simulation, vary the force applied to an object while keeping its mass
constant. How does the acceleration change?
 When the force applied to an object is increased while keeping its mass constant, the
acceleration of the object also increases. Conversely, decreasing the force results in a
decrease in acceleration.
3. Keeping the force constant, vary the mass of an object in the simulation. How does
the acceleration change?
 When the mass of an object is increased while keeping the force constant, the
acceleration decreases. Conversely, decreasing the mass leads to an increase in
acceleration, keeping the force constant.
4. Can you identify a scenario in the simulation where the force applied, and the
acceleration have a direct proportional relationship? Explain your observation.
 Yes, in the simulation, when the force applied to an object is increased, the acceleration of
the object also increases. This shows a direct proportional relationship between force and
acceleration.
5. Is there a relationship between the mass of an object and its acceleration when the
force applied is constant? Describe what you observe in the simulation.
 When the force applied to an object is constant, increasing the mass of the object leads to
a decrease in acceleration. Conversely, decreasing the mass results in an increase in
acceleration, keeping the force constant. Thus, there is an inverse relationship between
mass and acceleration when the force applied remains constant.
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new Explain
skills #1  Discuss the statement of the law of acceleration and the variables that affect the
acceleration of an object. “What does the second law of motion state?”
 Demonstrate “Push the Table Activity” to Emphasize at this point that massive objects are
harder to accelerate. Therefore, acceleration is inversely proportional to the mass of the
object.
E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new Discuss about the mathematical statement of the second law of motion using the
skills #2 examples below.
Example 1
A man pushed a load of mass 50 kg with a net force of 120 N. At what rate did the load
accelerates?

Example 2
A car travels with an average acceleration of 2.40 m/s 2. If the mass of the car is 1150 g, how
much force does its machine exerts to accelerate that much.?
Example 3
How much force is needed to kick a 1.5 kg ball such that it moves with a velocity of 20 m/s after
2 seconds?
F. Developing mastery (Leads to Formative Elaborate
Assessment 3) Distribute printed handouts with practice problems to students.
 Solve me!
The problems are as follow:
The chef pulled from the storage all the ingredients for his dish. If all the ingredients weigh
a total of 27.2 kg, by how much do the ingredients accelerate given the pull is 59.8 N.
If a rock, of mass 0.75 kg, is thrown such that is falls on the ground with an acceleration of
9.8 m/s2 (acceleration due to gravity), what is the total force acting on the ball?
How much force is needed to propel a rocket, with a mass of 2750 kg, to have a velocity of
80 km/hr when it reached time 15 seconds travel time?
 The students should solve the problem using the steps which were discussed.
Answer Key:
 2.20 m/s2
 7.35 N
 4,074.07 N
G. Finding practical applications of concepts and Describe on the scenario given and explain how the variables are interconnected based on the
skills in daily living relationship between force, acceleration, and mass is demonstrated.

a. Gender Equality
b. Charity

H. Making generalizations and abstractions about Let student state the 2nd Law of Motion
the lesson As a senior High School Student how will you relate the 2nd Law of Motion in terms of your
academic performance?
Solve for this
Ryan Amawan is maintaining a rooftop garden and needs to lift a pail of water to water his
plants. The pail has a mass of 10 kg when filled with water. Ryan applies a constant upward
force of 150 N to lift the pail. Determine the acceleration of the pail and whether Ryan can
successfully lift it.

Solution:
To solve this problem, we can apply the second law of motion, which states that the acceleration
of an object is directly proportional to the net force applied to it and inversely proportional to its
mass.

Given:
Mass of the pail with water (m) = 10 kg
Force applied (F) = 150 N

Step 1: Calculate the acceleration of the pail using the formula:

Acceleration (a) = Net force / Mass
=F/m
= 150 N / 10 kg
= 15 m/s2

Step 2: Analyze the acceleration:

Since the calculated acceleration is 15 m/s2, which is a significant value, it indicates that the pail
will experience a strong upward acceleration when Ryan applies the force of 150 N.

Step 3: Determine whether Ryan can successfully lift the pail:

Since the acceleration is upward, Ryab will be able to lift the pail successfully. The force of 150
N applied by Ryan is greater than the force of gravity acting on the pail
(weight = mass x gravitational acceleration). (10 kg x 9.81 m/s 2 = 98.1 N)

Therefore, Ryan's force is sufficient to overcome the gravitational force and lift the pail upward.

Verbal Misconception on Physics: In Physics “Force and Weight are the same”, therefore if they
ask your weight, you should multiply your “mass” to 9.81 m/s 2 (acceleration due to gravity) so
that you can accurately tell them your weight.
I. Evaluating learning Evaluate
Let the students answer the following questions:
1. If you push an object with a mass of 10 kg with a constant force of 4 N, what will
be its acceleration? Answer: 40 m/s2
2. To maintain the acceleration of an object which gained twice its original mass
during its travel, how much force should be applied to it? Answer: twice the
original force
3. State the law of acceleration. Answer: The law of acceleration states that the
acceleration of an object is directly related to the net force and inversely related
to its mass.
