1. INTRODUCTION
OpenAI was founded in December 2015 by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya
Sutskever, John Schulman, and Wojciech Zaremba. The organization was initially established as
a non-profit research lab with the goal of advancing artificial intelligence in a way that is safe
and beneficial to humanity.
The motivation behind OpenAI's creation was to address the potential risks associated with the
development of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and ensure that its benefits are shared
widely. The founders recognized that AGI could have significant societal implications and
wanted to ensure that its deployment and impact were carefully managed.
In its early years, OpenAI focused on conducting cutting-edge research in AI and publishing its
findings to contribute to the scientific community's knowledge. Notable contributions include
advancements in reinforcement learning, natural language processing, and computer vision.
Over time, OpenAI's approach evolved to accommodate a hybrid model, combining non-profit
and for-profit elements. In 2019, OpenAI created a for-profit entity called OpenAI LP to attract
additional funding and resources for its ambitious AGI research goals.
One of the significant milestones in OpenAI's history was the release of the GPT-2 (Generative
Pre-trained Transformer 2) language model in 2019. GPT-2 garnered widespread attention due to
its ability to generate coherent and contextually relevant text, raising concerns about its potential
misuse. OpenAI initially chose to limit the release of the full model for safety reasons but later
made it accessible to the public.
In 2020, OpenAI unveiled its successor, GPT-3, which represented a significant leap in language
modeling capabilities. GPT-3 demonstrated remarkable proficiency in various language tasks,
including text generation, translation, and question answering. Its release sparked further
discussions about the ethical and societal implications of powerful language models.

and automation across industries.
4. LANGUAGE MODEL
GPT stands for "Generative Pre-trained Transformer." It refers to a class of language models
developed by OpenAI. GPT models are based on the Transformer architecture, a type of deep
learning neural network that excels at processing sequential data, such as natural language. The
key idea behind GPT models is pre-training on a large corpus of text data and then fine-tuning
them for specific downstream tasks. During pre-training, the model is exposed to a vast amount
of publicly available text from the internet, which helps it learn grammar, language patterns, and
world knowledge. The Transformer architecture employed in GPT models allows them to capture
long-range dependencies and contextual relationships in text. It consists of multiple layers of
self-attention mechanisms, enabling the model to weigh the importance of different words or
tokens in a sentence based on their context.
After pre-training, the GPT models go through a fine-tuning process to adapt them to specific
tasks. Fine-tuning involves training the models on custom datasets that are created for particular
applications. This fine-tuning stage helps the models learn to generate contextually appropriate
and meaningful responses for tasks like text generation, translation, summarization, and more.
GPT models have demonstrated impressive capabilities in understanding and generating human-
like text. They can be used for a wide range of natural language processing tasks, including
language translation, question-answering, text completion, sentiment analysis, chatbots, and
more. It's important to note that GPT models rely on the patterns and statistical associations
learned from the training data and lack true understanding or consciousness. The models
generate text based on statistical probabilities rather than genuine comprehension of the content.
There are several GPT-based models developed by OpenAI, each with its own characteristics
and intended applications. Here are some notable ones:
One of the strengths of GPT-1 was its ability to generate fluent and coherent language
when given a prompt or context. The model was trained on a combination of two
datasets: the Common Crawl, a massive dataset of web pages with billions of words, and
the BookCorpus dataset, a collection of over 11,000 books on a variety of genres. The use
of these diverse datasets allowed GPT-1 to develop strong language modeling abilities.
While GPT-1 was a significant achievement in natural language processing (NLP), it had
certain limitations. For example, the model was prone to generating repetitive text,
especially when given prompts outside the scope of its training data. It also failed to
reason over multiple turns of dialogue and could not track long-term dependencies in
text. Additionally, its cohesion and fluency were only limited to shorter text sequences,
and longer passages would lack cohesion.
Despite these limitations, GPT-1 laid the foundation for larger and more powerful models
based on the Transformer architecture.
4.2.2 GPT-2 (Generative Pre-trained Transformer 2): GPT-2 was released before GPT-3
and gained significant attention for its impressive language generation capabilities.
Although it is smaller than GPT-3 (with 1.5 billion parameters), GPT-2 demonstrated
the ability to generate coherent and contextually relevant text. It has been widely used
for applications like text completion, creative writing, and content generation.
4.2.3 GPT-3 (Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3): GPT-3 is one of the most well-
known and powerful language models developed by OpenAI. It has 175 billion
parameters, making it the largest language model at the time of its release. GPT-3 is
highly versatile and capable of performing various natural language processing tasks,
including text generation, translation, summarization, and question-answering.
4.2.6 Codex (GitHub Copilot): Codex, formerly known as GitHub Copilot, is a language
model developed by OpenAI in collaboration with GitHub. It is designed to assist
software developers by providing auto-complete suggestions, code generation, and
programming assistance. Codex leverages GPT technology to understand and generate
code snippets based on user input.
This report also discusses a key challenge of the project, developing deep learning
infrastructure and optimization methods that behave predictably across a wide range of
scales. This allowed us to make predictions about the expected performance of GPT-4
(based on small runs trained in similar ways) that were tested against the final run to
increase confidence in our training. Despite its capabilities, GPT-4 has similar limitations
to earlier GPT models [1, 37, 38]: it is not fully reliable (e.g. can suffer from
“hallucinations”), has a limited context window, and does not learn from experience.
Care should be taken when using the outputs of GPT-4, particularly in contexts where
reliability is important. GPT-4’s capabilities and limitations create significant and novel
safety challenges, and we believe careful study of these challenges is an important area of
research given the potential societal impact. This report includes an extensive system
card (after the Appendix) describing some of the risks we foresee around bias,
disinformation, over-reliance, privacy, cybersecurity, proliferation, and more. It also
describes interventions we made to mitigate potential harms from the deployment of
GPT-4, including adversarial testing with domain experts, and a model-assisted safety
pipeline.
These are just a few examples of GPT-based models. OpenAI and other researchers continue to
explore and develop new variants, optimizing them for specific tasks, improving efficiency, and
addressing limitations to enhance their performance across various applications.
5. CHATGPT
5.1 INTRODUCTION
ChatGPT is a variant of OpenAI's language model based on the GPT (Generative Pre-trained
Transformer) architecture. It is designed specifically for generating human-like text responses in
a conversational context. ChatGPT is trained on a vast amount of text data from the internet,
allowing it to learn grammar, facts, and patterns of human language. ChatGPT excels in
understanding and generating natural language responses, making it well-suited for applications
like chatbots, virtual assistants, and interactive conversational systems. It can engage in back-
and-forth conversations, respond to user queries, provide information, and even offer suggestions
or recommendations.
OpenAI has developed multiple versions of ChatGPT, with GPT-3 being one of the most widely
known. These models have demonstrated the ability to generate coherent and contextually
relevant responses, but it's important to note that they don't possess true understanding or
consciousness. They rely on statistical patterns learned during training to generate text. OpenAI
is continuously working on improving and refining their language models, aiming to make them
more accurate, controlled, and aligned with user preferences and values. They are actively
exploring techniques to address potential biases, improve safety measures, and allow users to
have better control over the output of the models.
ChatGPT has been trained on a vast amount of text data from various sources available on the
internet, including books, articles, websites, and more. It uses a transformer neural network
architecture, which allows it to understand and generate coherent and contextually relevant
responses.
The model has the ability to understand and generate text in multiple languages, although its
proficiency may vary depending on the specific language. It can engage in conversations, answer
questions, provide explanations, offer suggestions, and assist with a wide range of topics.
ChatGPT is capable of understanding the context of a conversation and maintaining coherence in
its responses. It can generate responses that are often grammatically correct and demonstrate a
good understanding of the topic at hand. However, it's important to note that ChatGPT's
responses are based on patterns and examples it has seen during training, and it may occasionally
provide incorrect or nonsensical answers.
OpenAI has made efforts to ensure the responsible use of ChatGPT, including setting certain
ethical guidelines and deploying safety measures to mitigate potential biases and harmful
outputs. Nonetheless, it's important for users to critically evaluate and verify the information
provided by ChatGPT, especially when it comes to sensitive or high-stakes topics.
1. Pre-training:
Dataset: OpenAI collects a vast amount of text data from the internet, which serves as
the training dataset for ChatGPT.
Masked Language Modeling: The model learns to predict the next word in a
sentence by considering the context of the preceding words. During this process, some
words in the input are randomly masked, and the model is trained to predict the
original masked words.
2. Fine-tuning:
Enter Prompt or Question: Once you're on the ChatGPT interface, you'll see a text
input box where you can enter your prompt or question. Start by typing in your text.
Submit the Input: After entering your prompt or question, submit it by pressing the
"Enter" key or clicking the appropriate button on the interface.
Review the Response: ChatGPT will generate a response based on your input. Read the
response provided by the model carefully.
Evaluate and Iterate: As you engage in conversation with ChatGPT, evaluate the
generated responses for relevance, accuracy, and coherence. If necessary, iterate the
process by asking more specific questions or providing additional context to guide the
model's understanding.
Repeat as Needed: Continue the conversation and repeat the steps as needed to obtain
the desired information or engage in a meaningful dialogue with ChatGPT.
Remember to keep in mind that ChatGPT's responses are based on patterns it has learned from
its training data. While it strives to provide accurate and helpful information, it may
occasionally produce incorrect or nonsensical answers. Exercise critical thinking and verify
information obtained from ChatGPT from reliable sources when necessary.
Additionally, different platforms or applications may have slight variations in the interface or
procedures, but the overall concept of interacting with ChatGPT remains similar.
5.4 ADVANTAGES
Extensive Knowledge Base: As ChatGPT is trained on a vast corpus of text data, it has
access to a wide range of information. It can provide explanations, offer suggestions,
and share general knowledge on a broad array of subjects. This can be particularly
useful when seeking information or learning about unfamiliar topics.
Continuous Improvement: OpenAI actively refines and improves the model through an
iterative feedback process with human reviewers. This ongoing improvement helps
address biases, enhance the model's performance, and provide users with better and
more reliable responses over time.
Assistance and Support: ChatGPT can provide assistance and support on a wide range
of topics. It can help users find information, offer suggestions, give explanations, and
engage in conversations. This versatility makes it a valuable tool for users seeking
guidance or seeking answers to their queries. While ChatGPT offers numerous
advantages, it's important to exercise critical thinking and verify information obtained
from the model, especially in situations where accuracy and reliability are crucial.

While ChatGPT has demonstrated impressive language generation capabilities, it also has
several disadvantages:
Bias and Offensive Language: ChatGPT may sometimes generate biased or offensive
responses. Since it learns from large-scale datasets from the internet, which can contain
biased or offensive content, the model can inadvertently replicate and amplify such biases
or offensive language. Efforts have been made to mitigate these issues, but they still
persist to some extent.
Inability to Ask Clarifying Questions: ChatGPT lacks the ability to seek clarifications
or ask follow-up questions to better understand ambiguous queries. It may make
assumptions about the user's intent or provide incomplete answers when the input is not
explicit.
It's important to approach and utilize ChatGPT's responses with caution, considering its
limitations. OpenAI has been actively working on addressing these drawbacks and improving the
model's performance, but they remain ongoing challenges in the field of language generation.
5.6 LIMITATIONS
Lack of Common Sense: ChatGPT does not possess inherent common sense reasoning
abilities. While it can generate responses based on patterns learned from training data, it
may struggle with tasks that require real-world knowledge or reasoning beyond the
information it has been trained on.
It is crucial to approach ChatGPT's responses critically and validate information from reliable
sources. OpenAI continues to work on addressing these limitations and enhancing the
capabilities of the model through ongoing research and development efforts.
ChatGPT faces several challenges, both technical and ethical, which include:

reduced costs. The possible threats in this domain are privacy concerns and potential for biased
recommendations.
In this section, we focus on the domain of education discussed in section 3 and perform an
experimental study.
Our case study is the midterm exam of SYS 3060: Stochastic Decision Models, a junior level
course in the Department of Systems and Information Engineering at the University of Virginia,
held in person in March 2023. As input in our experiment, we only told ChatGPT that these
questions were related to the course topic. We gave the questions to both versions of GPT-3.5
and GPT-4 and repeated the experiment 50 times (n1 = n2 = 50), and to prevent possible biases,
we performed these experiments with different Internet Protocols (IPs), and the same person
graded all the exams with the opportunity of receiving partial credits in 0.5 increments. Table 1
summarizes the result of 9 Preprint accepted in IEEE Systems and Information Engineering
Design Symposium (SIEDS) 2023 these experiments. We conducted normality assumption tests
with a significance level of α = 0.05 for GPT-3.5, and
The Shapiro-Wilk and Anderson-Darling tests resulted in a p-value greater than α, indicating that
the data can be assumed to be approximately normal. However, for GPT-4, the data is not normal
but negatively skewed, indicating that most scores are closer to the higher end and the maximum
score.
Since one dataset is assumed to be normally distributed and the other is not, instead of a t-test,
we used the Mann-Whitney U test (also known as the Wilcoxon rank-sum test), which does not
assume any particular distribution of the data.
The result of the test showed a p-value very close to zero (p-value = 2.2 × 10−16 < 0.05 = α),
leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis, which asserts that the medians of the two samples
are identical. Figure 1 displays the histograms and box plots of the data for GPT-3.5 and GPT-4.
We can observe that the median score of GPT-4 is significantly higher than that of GPT-3.5,
indicating that GPT-4 outperforms the previous version. It is worth noting that some of the
questions on the exam were referring to subjects discussed in the class, and that is why none of
the samples obtained by GPT-4 could reach the max score, which is 100%

The future scope of ChatGPT, or similar language models, is vast and holds great potential for
various applications. Here are a few areas where ChatGPT and similar models can have an
impact:
Content Generation: ChatGPT can assist with content creation across various domains.
It can generate blog posts, articles, product descriptions, and social media captions. It can
also help writers brainstorm ideas, provide research assistance, and suggest
improvements for existing content.
Language Learning and Translation: Language models like ChatGPT can aid in
language learning by providing interactive conversations, offering explanations, and
engaging learners in dialogue practice. They can also facilitate translation services by
quickly translating text from one language to another.
Creative Writing and Storytelling: ChatGPT can assist writers, poets, and storytellers
in generating ideas, refining plots, and developing characters. They can help spark
creativity and provide alternative perspectives during the creative process.
Research and Data Analysis: Language models can assist researchers by processing
large volumes of text, summarizing research papers, and extracting relevant information.
They can help identify patterns, trends, and insights across diverse domains.
ChatGPT may struggle with maintaining context, generating coherent responses, and
understanding nuanced or ambiguous queries. It can exhibit biases present in its training data
and may produce incorrect or speculative information without fact-checking capabilities. The
model's limitations include a lack of common sense reasoning, vulnerability to adversarial
inputs, and difficulties in handling emotional context or ambiguity.
Responsible use and deployment of ChatGPT involve addressing ethical concerns, managing
user expectations, and mitigating potential risks associated with biased or offensive content.
OpenAI and the research community are actively working to improve the model, enhance its
capabilities, and address the limitations it currently faces.
While ChatGPT offers exciting possibilities, it is important to approach its responses critically,
validate information from reliable sources, and understand the model's limitations in order to
make informed and responsible use of its language generation capabilities.
