FIELD TRIP

information by observing places, objects, phenomena or activities and processes
in their natural setting to further learning”

PURPOSES OF FIELD TRIP

 To make a connection between reality and theory.


 Can be used as an introduction to a unit
 To provide an authentic learning experience.
 Provide opportunity for students to get to meet and interact with others.
 They can experience all five senses, see, touch, feel, smile, taste.

ORGANIZTION OF A FIELD TRIP

Organization if the field trip includes the following phases:

 Preplanning
 Actual conduct of the trip
 Evaluation phase

Preplanning

The teacher has to plan the following along with the students participation.

 Decide on the trip.

 Know the resources.

 Obtain administrative sanction of the school / college.

 Obtain permission from the organization that is to be visited.


 Formulate objectives for the visit.

 List down specific information to be obtained.

 Arrange transport.

 Prepare a guide sheet and formulate questions to be asked to the guide.

 Divide and allot students into group.

 Brief students the following instructions;

 Equipment and accessories needed.

 Date and exact time of transport.

 Actual location and setup place of being visited

 Conduct and behavior expected during the visit

 Safety precautions to be observed.

Actual conduct of the trip

Follow the schedule exactly, avoiding alterations.

 Strictly follow safety precautions.

 Observe and collect information needed based upon the educational


objectives.

 Collect source/ study materials as per availability.

 Teacher has to be a good supervisor and should call the attention of the
students.

 Observe formalities

Evaluation phase

 A well planned follow up session after the field trip increases its
educational value.

 It should include group discussion about the effectiveness of the trip and
extent to which educational objectives are obtained.
 Any learning material collected during the field trip should be displayed
for others.

TEACHER’S ROLE

 Watch students closely.

 Gives specific help as and when needed.

 Avoids frequent interruption.

 Avoids loud voiced comments.

 Act as a guide, resource person or consultant.

 Supplements learning by timely explanation.

 Gives relevant follow up activities.

ADVANTAGES OF FIELD TRIPS

 Field trips supplement enrich curriculum experiences.

 They provide first hand experiences.

 They break the monotony of classroom lectures.

 They offer varied types of experiences to the students.

 They provide accurate information about objects, processes and systems


in the real settings..

 They involve all senses while learning.

 They develop social skills among the students.

 They are more meaningful and permit easier transfer of learning.

 ideals learnt in classroom can be better fixed in mind in actual situations.

 Outdoors, students are able to work with large size materials.

LIMITATIONS OF FIELD TRIP

 They are expensive


 Require proper planning
