A study on the applications of congruent

triangles in Real life

Abstract
Congruent shapes and it’s applications are found in daily life situations. While the applications of
congruence of triangles are limited in daily life situations.

This study deals with the applications of congruent triangles in real life situations, such as architecture
and construction field, trusses, Geodesic dome etc.

Keywords
Congruence, Trusses, Geodesic Domes

Introduction
Mathematics provides an effective way of building mental discipline and encourages logical reasoning
and mental rigor. Congruence refers to two figures or objects that are exact replicas of one another. The
congruent figures overlap point-to-point when they are stacked one on top of the other. The concept of
Congruence is helpful in the fields of architecture, landscape designs, product modeling and business-
to-business manufacturing. The triangle is one of the most stable shapes and congruence is essential for
producing even surfaces. Truss bridge and Geodesic Domes are some applications of congruent triangles.
The purpose of this project “ A study on congruence of triangles “ is to know more about the
congruence of triangles and it’s applications of real life.

Need and significance

Two triangles are congruent when the three sides and three angles of one triangle have the same
measurement as three sides and three angles of another triangle. Congruent triangles are employed in
the building process to strengthen the framework. This guarantees that the structures are rigid and
strong. Pages of some book are the real life examples of congruent shapes. In congruent figures, the
shape and the size should remain equal when we flip, turn or even rotate the shapes and it can be
placed over each other. It strengthens learners the concept and help them form more understanding of
the concepts of areas and volumes.
Objectives of the study
The main objectives of the study are as follows:

 To study the applications of congruence in daily life.

 To study the concept congruence of triangles in detail.
 To study and analyze the applications of congruent triangles in architecture and construction
fields.
 To analyze the Practicability of congruent triangles in the field of Truss bridge and Geodesic
Domes.

Methodology
The method adopted for this study is descriptive analysis. The project is conducted based on
secondary data. After deciding the topic and the objective of the study, relevant data was collected from
various secondary sources like research articles, internet, e-book, books etc...

Analysis and Interpretation

1. Applications of congruence in daily life
In geometry, congruent means identical in shape and size. Congruence can be applied to line
segments, angles and figures. Any two line segments are said to be congruent if they are equal
in length. Two angles are said to be congruent if they are of equal measures. Two figures are
said to be congruent if their corresponding sides and angles are equal.

Some examples are revealed the idea of congruent figures.

1. Pages of a book
2. The spokes of the ferris wheel
3. Pencils in a box
4. Nuts and bolts
5. Kidneys and lungs in our body
Congruence in figures is an interesting concept that helped us build and improve math reasoning skills.
Sometimes it forms a parameter of perfection and can be a useful element for quality checks. In our
human body, internal organs that are congruence of each other. These examples revealed the
importance of congruency in our daily life.

2. The concept congruence of triangles

Two triangles are said to be congruent if pairs of their corresponding sides and angles are equal.
They are of the same size and shape.
Some of the congruent rules are given below:
 SAS ( Side – Angle - Side) congruence rule
 ASA (Angle – Side – Angle) congruence rule
 SSS (Side – Side – Side) congruence rule
 RHS congruence rule
 AAS (Angle – Angle – Side) Congruence rule

3. Application of congruent triangles in architecture and construction fields

Building our understanding of structures requires learning about congruent in figures. The
concept of Congruence is helpful in the field of architecture, landscape design, product modelling and
business-to-business manufacturing. Congruent triangles guarantees that the structures are rigid and
strong. As a result, they are unaffected by strong winds or weather related conditions. Large man made
structures cannot be built without them.
When a force is applied to one of the corner of a triangle, it is distributed down each side. Two sides of
the triangles are squeezed ( Compression). The third side of the triangle is pulled or stretched ( Tension)
sideways. Congruent triangles are used in the construction of tower, bridges and buildings.
4. Practicability of Congruent triangles in the field of Truss bridge and
Geodesic Domes

You often see triangles used to create bridges. Bridges combine multiple triangles. They
apply compression and tension in different places. Triangles can be used to make trusses. Trusses
are used in many structures such as roofs, bridges and buildings.

Truss Bridge

Trusses combine horizontal beams and diagonal beams to form triangles. Bridges that uses
trusses are called “ Truss bridge “ There are several types of trusses used in bridge design.
 Warren Truss
 Howe Truss
 Pratt Truss
 K- Truss

Triangles are used in Roofs

A type of truss commonly used to support roofs is called “King post truss”. A king post truss has a
horizontal beam called the ‘tie beam’ and a vertical beam called the ‘ king post’. The king post trusses
are then connected together with more beams to form a strong and stable structure that can support a
roof. There fore it can be revealed the benefits of congruent triangles.
Geodesic Dome
This is common playground equipment, angles and side lengths must be created such that all
triangles involved are congruent under the SAS rule. Geodesic dome is a hemispherical thin- shell
structure based on a Geodesic polyhedron. The triangular elements of the dome are structurally rigid
and distribute the structural stress throughout the structure, making geodesic dome able to withstand
very heavy loads for their size.

Finally we can understand that the fact congruence figures are commonly seen in nature or
surroundings. Congruence triangles are well used in the construction of different works. It gives an
aesthetic view of mathematics subject and it reveals the application of mathematics.

Findings and Conclusion

When a triangles are said to be congruent to another triangle, it means that the corresponding parts
of each triangle are congruent. Congruence is an important mathematical idea for human to understand
the structure of their environment. Through this project, ‘ A study on the applications of congruent
triangles in real life ‘ – I was able to understand the various properties, characteristics and uses of
congruent triangles. The study help me to know more about how the properties and rules of congruent
triangles are used in the field of architecture and in the field of sports. Through the study of trusses,
triangles are used in many structures such as bridges, roofs and buildings. Geodesic dome gives a new
experience in the field of sports. These studies revealed that triangles are more stable and give extra
strengthen to the construction. It brings the wide applications of mathematics in real life. This project
help me to reveal the aesthetic view of congruence of triangles and it’s applications.

In conclusion, the study on congruence of triangles unveils its wide ranging applications in our
daily lives. Congruence is a fundamental concept that empowers us to understand and manipulate our
physical and digital environments more effectively. By appreciating the practical significance of
congruence, we can enhance problem- solving abilities and foster innovation across various fields.
