CHAPTER2Synthesis G4

The researchers gathered literature and studies from local and foreign sources on healthcare workers' assessment of stress management and problems encountered with excessive workloads causing stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. Studies found that frontline workers experienced high stress and mental health issues. With increasing caseloads and staffing shortages, hospital employees risked becoming overwhelmed or even patients themselves. Effective coping strategies and stress management programs are vital to mitigate negative impacts to health, job performance, and patient care quality among nurses experiencing heavy workloads.

Synthesis of Related Literature and Studies

The researchers gathered various related literature and studies from both

local and foreign writers, authors, and studies. The researchers will use these

studies to identify healthcare workers assessment in Stress management and

problems encountered when faced with excessive workloads that causes stress.

Miraflor (2020) explained that the persistence of COVID-19 pandemic

already brought the Philippine economy to recession, will come out in more of

Filipino employees experiencing and suffering from mental health issues which

would be “harmful” to businesses, as stated by a certain mental health

technology organization. The frontliners are totally stressed and overwhelmed on

this pandemic. Tangan (2020) stated that The Inter-agency Standing Committee

(IASC) some might also experience ostracization or exclusion from the

community due to stigma.

(Philstar, 2020) Due to the increasing infected of patients, and shortage of

staff, hospital employees may end up as patients or worse in if they carry on with

their heavy workloads. Rola (2020) revealed that Dr. Edgar Jolly Santos, one of

the country’s health workers battling the COVID-19 pandemic, has worked 12

hours a day since the outbreak of the infectious disease started. Santos also

stated it is more of the mental stress that tremendously affects him and his fellow

health care workers.

According to One News (2020) the reason why the Frontliners called for a

‘time-out’, though the number of recoveries is increasing, the numbers of cases

were also increasing. (Dayrit and Jabonete, 2020) Thus, effective coping strategy

or stress management programs are vital to negate the negative effect on the

health, job performance, and quality patients care of these nurses.

(Sturm, H. et. al, 2019) Measures of workload correspond clearly with

subjective work-related stress and strain, (Havei & Macphee, 2020) therefore, the

job quality and efficiency of nursing are being compromised.

Andra (2019) described that a stressed workforce can have detrimental

effects on the organization as a whole. (Cruz, J.P., et. al, 2018) Dealing with

work-related stress such as workload, optimism, and proactive coping have a

positive impact on the quality of life of nurses.

Torrentira (2020) conducted a research to have a data on how to response

of this situation of our medical frontliners. Shaukat, Ali, and Razzak (2020)

pointed out that there are strategies they implemented for the safety and

protections of our healthcare workers.

Furthermore, Salman, Raza, Mustafa, Khan, Asif, Tahir, Shehzadi, and

Hussain (2020) aimed to assess the psychological impact of COVID-19 on

frontline HCWs and their coping strategies. (Castro, B.V.d. et al, 2016) Revealed

that work execution has a positive impact on organizational support, confirming

the positive relationship between autonomy and job satisfaction.

According to the study conducted by Fernandez, Lord, Halcomb, Moxham,

Middleton, Alananzeh, and Ellwood (2020) said that providing nursing care in this

context has the potential to have significant short- and long-term consequences

for individual nurses, society, and the nursing professions.
