TOEFL Writing Section

The passage discusses tidal power generation technology. A barrage or dam is built across an estuary or bay to trap water. When the tide rises, gates open to allow water in. When the tide peaks, gates close, trapping water above sea level. As the tide falls, gates reopen, releasing the trapped water through turbines to generate electricity. Four periods of energy production are possible daily. For practical generation, tide differences must exceed 5 meters. Tidal power is renewable, non-polluting, and carbon-free. It can supplement other energy sources as fossil fuel reserves diminish. The lecture casts doubt on points from the passage. While the passage discusses tidal power's benefits, the lecture notes its limitations and challenges,

Next, listen to the related lecture and take notes. Then write your response.

i Tid a l Pow er
j Technology is available to exploit the potential energy formed
by tides for the generation of electrical energy. The basic
I structure is a barrage or dam built across a river estuary or at the
j mouth of a bay. This dam is simiiar to that used in hydroelectric
j power plants built across flowing rivers. At regular intervals
j along the dam, gates and turbines are installed. When the tide
| is rising, the gates are opened. This allows water to flow into the
| area behind the barrage, raising the water level there. When the
j water has reached its highest level, the gates are dosed. Then
j the tide drops on the seaward side, and this trapped water is
j several meters above the sea level. Th e gates are then opened,
j allowing the water to discharge out. The force of the flow turns
1 the turbines and generates electricity. It is also possible to use
j tidal energy when the water flows in the other direction _ through
{ the gates into the estuary from the sea.
I In this way, four periods of energy production are possible
every day, since coastal regions experience two high and two
!ow tides in just over 24 hours. In order for practical amounts
of electricity to be generated, the difference between high and
!ow tides must be at least five meters. Tidal power is renewable,
non-polluting, and contributes no greenhouse gases to the
atmosphere. This kind of system can provide a useful energy
supplement to other sources in an era of diminishing fossil fuel
reserves.
