I- Hot Rolled Steel Section Types

1) Wide-Flange Section (W- and M-section)

W18 X 50 is a W-section approximately 18 in deep, weighing 50 lb/ft

M-section: Miscellaneous section.

4. Tee Section (WT, ST, MT)
The prefix of the designation is either WT, ST, or MT, depending on which
shape is the “parent”.

5. Tee Section (WT, ST, MT)

WT18 × 105 has a nominal depth of 18 inches and a weight of 105 lb/ft, and is
cut from a W36 × 210.
ST10 × 33 is cut from S20 × 66.
MT5 × 4 is cut from M10 × 8.

Cold Rolled Steel Sections

These are made by bending thin sheets of carbon or low alloy steels into
almost any desired cross section, such as the ones shown in the following
figure:

II- Built –Up Steel Sections

• To increase 𝐴, 𝐼𝑥 , and 𝐼𝑦

• Tie plates (and gusset plates) are not considered in design calculations;

𝐴, 𝐼𝑥 , and 𝐼𝑦 of the built-up cross-section.

Steel Construction Manual

Constant reference is made throughout this Course to the Steel

Construction Manual, published by the American Institute of Steel
Construction (AISC). This manual, which provides detailed information for
structural steel shapes, is referred to hereafter as “the AISC-Manual”.
Structural shapes are identified by a certain system described in the Manual
for use in drawings, specifications, and designs.

AISC-Manual (Part-1)

In Part -1 of the Manual, Tables of dimensions and properties of W, S,C, and

other shapes are given such as:
Area (A), moments of inertia (Ix, Iy), section moduli (Sx, Sy), radii of gyration
(rx, ry), and other cross-sectional properties which will be discussed later. As
shown in the next slides.
