Assignment 1 – Q1
The Y-shaped structure shown Fig. Q1(a) is supporting loads due to dead
loads and imposed loads from a warehouse building on the left and an
office building on the right. It is also subjected to wind load either from
the left or the right as shown. Given fck =40 MPa, and characteristic loads:

GkL = 2000 kN; QkL = 3500 kN;

GkR = 2800 kN; QkR = 1500 kN;
Wk = 100 kN.

(a) Determine the load combinations and the corresponding axial force
and moment at the base of the Y-shaped structure. Neglect self-weight
of the structure and consider in-plane bending only.
(b) Determine if the reinforcement shown in Fig. Q1(b) is adequate for the
section at the base of the structure. If not, suggest a suitable solution.

Hint: Derive the N-M diagram for the section and check if all combinations
of N and M fall within the diagram.

Assignment 1 – Q2
Fig. Q2 shows a circular section symmetrically reinforced
with six H20 bars, with a cover of 50 mm measured to the
centre of bars. Given that fyk = 500 MPa, Es = 200 GPa, and
fck = 40 MPa.
(a) Determine the shear capacity of the section without
transverse reinforcement, VRd,c. You may assume an
equivalent square section with effective depth equal to
0.8 times the diameter of the circular section, and
400
consider half the total longitudinal steel area as effective.
(b) Determine the torsional cracking capacity of the section
without transverse reinforcement, TRd,c.
50
(c) Determine whether the size is adequate for the section to
carry a design shear force, VEd, of 200 kN, together with
a design torsional moment, TEd, of 50 kNm, assuming
that the required reinforcement has been provided. All dimensions are in mm.
Assume q = 45o.
(d) Determine the reinforcement required to resist the Fig. Q2
combined shear force of 200 kN and torsional moment
of 50 kNm, and show the reinforcement in a sketch.
