MITOSIS

CELL CYCLE
The process a cell goes through each
time it divides. The cell cycle consists
of a series of steps during which the
chromosomes and other cell material
double to make two copies. The cell
then divides into two daughter cells,
each receiving one copy of the
doubled material.
WHAT IS MITOSIS
The process by which a single
parent cell divides to make two
new daughter cells. Each daughter
cell receives a complete set of
chromosomes from the parent cell.
This process allows the body to
grow and replace cells.
PHASES OF MITOSIS
PROPHASE
Prophase is the first phase of mitosis, the process that separates the
duplicated genetic material carried in the nucleus of a parent cell into two
identical daughter cells. Prophase is followed by the second phase of
mitosis, known as prometaphase.

During prophase:

- Nuclear membrane disappears.

- 2 sets of Chromosomes condensed.
- Centrosomes moving opposite directions.
- Spindle fibers forms.
PROMETAPHASE
Prometaphase is the second phase of mitosis, the process that separates
the duplicated genetic material carried in the nucleus of a parent cell into
two identical daughter cells.

During Prometaphase

- Nuclear membrane breaks down

- Centrosomes moving opposite directions.
- Chromosomal aligned between the spindle poles.
METAPHASE
Metaphase is a stage during the process of cell division (mitosis or meiosis).
Normally, individual chromosomes are spread out in the cell nucleus.

During metaphase

- Chromosomes lined up in the middle of the cell.

- Centrosomes reached both poles.
- Spindle fiber is longer.
ANAPHASE
Anaphase is the stage of mitosis after the process of
metaphase, when replicated chromosomes are split
and the newly-copied chromosomes are moved to
opposite poles of the cell.
TELOPHASE
Telophase is the fifth and final phase of mitosis, the
process that separates the duplicated genetic
material carried in the nucleus of a parent cell into
two identical daughter cells. Telophase begins once
the replicated, paired chromosomes have been
separated and pulled to opposite sides, or poles, of
the cell.
SIGNIFICANCE OF MITOSIS

* Mitosis is important for Asexual reproduction indirectly.

* It allows the sexually reproducing organism to grow and
develop from a single cell to sexually mature individual.
* This allows organism to continue to reproduce through the
generation.
* The mitosis helps to maintaining proper size.
* It helps in the maintenance of equilibrium in the amout of DNA
and RNA in the cell
* Helps in repairing injured cells
* Brings about replacement of dead cells by new cells
APPLICATION OF MITOSIS
Numerous biological contexts use mitosis, a cellular process of cell division.
It is essential for development in the areas of growth, tissue repair, asexual
and sexual reproduction, and genetics, biotechnology, and cancer
research. For example, mitosis enables multicellular organisms to grow and
develop, to regenerate tissues after injury, to create genetically identical
cells for cloning and gene editing, and to comprehend genetic mutations
and diseases. It has numerous applications in science and technology and
is essential to many biological processes.
