Applications of Embellishment Techniques in Fabrics and Clothing

Fabric embellishments are decorations that are normally added or attached to fabrics to make
them more beautiful and add more value in terms of money. Today adding embellishments has
become the ultimate tool of the decorator. Through this assignment we will be considering the
fabric embellishments and garment embellishments. The embellishment on fabric can be
achieved through printing, tie-dye, batik, stencils, lamination, bonding, Decorative cutting,
Special seam applying and etc. The most important thing which designers should keep in the
mind while embellishing the fabric is “principles of arts”. The design should have
balance, proportion, emphasis, variety, movement, rhythm, and harmony.

“Textile embellishment refers to the process of adding color, pattern, texture or design to
fabric through the use of outside mediums such as thread, ribbon, sequins, yarns, buttons,
buttonholes and more” (Atwood, 2008).

Importance of Embellishments
 Embellishment is important as decorative detail or feature added to something to make it
more attractive.
 Add value to the fabric.
 To make a product better than what it is already.
 To add beauty and increase profit in fabric.
 Make fabric good according to the taste and demand of consumer.
 Make fabric elegant and attractive with different techniques.

It is necessary for both male and females fabrics if enhance the beauty. There must be some
limits of embellishment for male fabrics and even for female fabrics. The age of the end
consumer plays a vital role in the fabric embellishment. It also depends upon the likes and
dislikes of individual which vary from individual to individual. Type of embellishment can have
a concert with age not embellishment alone

Advantages of Embellishments
 Identity and Creativity.
 Add beauty to the fabric and Garment.
 Increase the value of the fabric and the Garment made out of it.
 Shows the personality of the wearer.
 Attract consumers.
 Simple material can be converted into many styles and shapes.
Disadvantages of Embellishments
 More expensive product will be the output
 Less durable due to finishings and the embellishments added. (Chemicals and etc.)
 Difficult to handle like washing and ironing etc.
 Need extra care during handling.
 Heavily embellished fabrics are less wearable.

Textiles in particular have a long and full tradition of embellishment since ancient era. Additions
to fabric can take the form of nearly anything such as an addition of pure stitching to other
fabrics, beads, metals, wood, glass, precious stones and animal products. Embellishment can also
take many forms, with pattern work following the suggestion of nature, the geometrical abstract,
fonts and lettering. It can be perceived as a subtlety, the changing of colour, line and texture, or it
can be much bolder, using large-scale shapes and patterns. Whatever the technique or suggestion
for composition, the end result is always nearly the same, to make something more than it was, to
add decoration to enhance its attraction to the individual.

Nowadays embellishments aren’t complex than the past since we provide fabrics and clothing to
a mass market where time is the most important fact as well as the quality. When number of
embellishment increases the time taken per garment automatically increases. For instance a
decorative cutting on the bottom hem line may add additional seconds to the standard minute
value of the garment. This proves that embellishments costs money and pricing will be
tremendously higher than the cost we spent on a particular embellishment. Let’s take look at
today’s embellishments we can see on mass produced garments.

 Standard Embroidery- Applying a design onto a product using a needle and thread.
Ex: – Polo Brand image has embroidered in their T shirts
 Twill (applique) - material cut out and embroidered onto a product, often used to lower
stitch counts.
Ex: - We can see this in Football, Basketball, and Baseball and Softball uniforms.
(A picture of the team pet or brand will be applique).
 Glitter Applique- A twill design in which the top layer is premium glitter (fashion film).
A matching satin stich will be applied to outline of the glitter layer. Once it is sewn, the
design will be heat pressed for permanent adhesion. Standard stitching cannot be sewn
through the glitter layer.
 Embroidery Sequins- A plastic sequin embroidered onto a product.
 Screen Print (spot color) - Top applied method of printing by forcing ink through mesh
fabric screens.
 DTG (Direct to Garment) - Digital printing using inks that are absorbed directly into the
product.
 Sport Grip - Transfer material that is cut out and applied to a product using a heat press.
 Screen Print Transfers - Screen printed material applied with a heat press, available in
names and numbers.
 Fashion Film -Transfer material that is cut out and applied to a product using a heat
press.
 Flexi Print - Printable transfer material that is applied to a product using a heat press.
 Sequin Dots -A flat, plastic material that mimics traditional sewn on sequins that are
applied using a heat press.
 Rhinestones - Quality acrylic rhinestones applied to the product using a heat press.
 Twill w/ Rhinestones - Incorporating the standard twill process with heat applied
rhinestones.
 Neon Studs - An acrylic, rounded stud applied using a heat press.
 Decorative cutting – a cut with decoration .Most widely used at ladies blouses and
skirts.
These are some embellishments that can be added to a garment which add significant value to
final product. New embellishments are yet to be found with new technologies and trends..
