I. OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:

 Determine the position of data using Mendenhall method

 Interpret the measures of position.
 Appreciate measures of position in solving real life problems.

A. Content Standards The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of measures of position.

The learner is able to conduct systematically a mini-research applying the

B. Performance Standard
different statistical methods.

C. Most Essential Learning The learner illustrates the following measures of position: quartiles, deciles and

IV. PROCEDURES

I. Preliminary activity
a. Greetings Good Morning Classmate!
Good morning Class Good Morning Sir!

b. Prayer Almighty GOD!

Let’s Pray You are the source of life,
Thank You for all the
blessings that You have
given to us.
Thank you for giving us
another day to learn
something new. Clear our
mind and help us focus,
Guide us and our teacher as
we study, and create new
learning experiences
We pray in the name of
Jesus Christ. AMEN!
c. Energizer
d. Attendance
Do we have any absentees for today?
Sir I’m glad to tell you that
Very good class! Give yourself a round of there is no absent today
applause.

e. Checking of Assignment
Do we have any assignment? Yes Sir!
f. Review

What was our lesson last lesson all about? Our last lesson is all about
quartile and how to get
g. Motivation lower and upper quartile.
For us to get engaged for today’s lesson, I
have prepared here a game. It is anagram, it is
a type of word play. It is the result of a word
or phrase to produce a new word or phrase
using all the original exact letter of the word.

1. grid noun
2. do them Rounding
Method
2
3. en let me Element
4. I point so Position
5. declaim Decimal

IV. Lesson Proper

1. Activity
Answer the given problem.
The lower quartile of data set is the 8th data
value. How many data values are there in the
data set.
2. Analysis
How do you able to get the data values of data By applying the concept of
values? quartiles.
In what data element does lower quartile 7th data element
falls?
In what data element does the upper quartile 24th data element
falls?

MENDENHALL AND SINCICH METHOD

- Using statistics for Engineering and the
Science, define a different method of
finding quartile values. To apply their
method on data set with n elements.
For Example:
Formula: Find the First and third
quartile, given the scores of
1 9 students in their
Lower quartile (L) = Q1 = (n+1)
4 mathematics activity.
{1,3,7,7,16,21,27,30,31}
3 Solution :
Upper quartile (U) = Q3 = (n+1)
4 Use the formula and
interpret.

Q1 = 2.5 (round up)

3rd data element so Q1 = 7

Q3=7.5 (round down)

7th data element so Q3 = 27

Example number 2.
Find the first, second and
third quartile given the last
13
{ 21, 30, 10, 7, 24, 27,
19, 24, 11, 26, 19, 25,}
Solution:
{7,10,11,19,19,21,24,24,25,
26,27,30,}
Use the formula and
interpret.

Q1 = 3.25 (round up)

4th data element so Q1 = 19

3
Q2 =6.5
Between 6 and 7 data
Q2 = 22.5
Q2= 9.75 (round down)
9th data element so Q3 = 25

3. Abstraction

When do you need to round up? If the answer of the lower

quartile is not whole
number.
When do you need round down?
If the answer of the upper
What is second quartile? quartile is not whole number
The middle value of data
set.

4. Application
Seat work
a. Find the first quartile, second quartile and
third quartile given the scores of 10
students in their mathematics activity:
{4,9,7,14,10,8,12,15,6,11}
b. Find the Q1 , Q2 , Q3 given the data of ages
of 14 students in college.
{22,20,25,19,23,22,27,19,19,21,20,26,27,
28}
c. Find the first and third quartile given the
final grade of 12 students of grade 8
students:
{88,80,83,82,81,86,88,90,91,84,82,84}

5. Assessment
Answer the following question on a ¼ sheet
of paper.

Use the data set from 1 up to 100. A

1. What is Q1?
a. 25 c. 75
b. 50 d. 50.5
2. What is Q2 B
a. 25 c. 75
b. 50 d. 50.5
3. What is Q3 C
a. 25 c. 75
b. 50 d.50.5
4. What will happened to the answer if it is B
not whole number in Q1 ?
a. Stay the same
b. Round up to the nearest whole number
c. Round down to the nearest whole

4
number.
d. Add 1 or deduct 1 depending on the
situation. C
5. What will happened to the answer if it is
not whole number in Q3 ?
a. Stay the same
b. Round up to the nearest whole number
c. Round down to the nearest whole
number.
d. Add 1 or deduct 1 depending on the
situation.

V. Reflection

I understand that__________________.
I realize that_____________________.
I need to learn more _______________.

A. No. of learners who earned 80% in the evaluation

B. No. of learners who require additional activities for remediation

C. Did the remedial lessons work? No. of learners who have caught up with
the lesson
D. No. of learners who continue to require remediation

E. Which of my teaching strategies work well? Why did this work?

F. What difficulties did I encounter which my principal or supervisor can help
me solve?
G. What innovations or localized materials did I used/discover which I wish
to share with other teachers?
