Module 4 Question – Earthquakes

Check out current/recent seismicity for the United States and Canada, or for the world, over the
period of a) one week AND b) one month. 1) Tabulate by magnitude and 2) compare with Table
4.2, Frequency of Earthquakes of Various Magnitudes, in the textbook. 3) Are the recent data
consistent with respect to the relative frequencies of earthquakes of different sizes? The USGS
website http://earthquake.usgs.gov/ provides links to the relevant data. Specifically, use the
‘Search Earthquake Catalog’ page, https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/search/ to access the
necessary data.
