Tutorial 3: Coupled Oscillations and Waves

1. Three identical masses m are connected in series by four identical springs of spring constant k
so that the two loose ends of the springs in the corners are connected to walls as shown in the
figure below. Find the normal mode frequencies and corresponding normal mode eigenvectors.

2. Carbon dioxide is a linear molecule, with the carbon atom (mass m and position x2 ) in the
middle and two oxygen atoms (mass M and positions x1 and x3 ) at the two ends as shown in
the figure below. Assuming that the centre of mass of this system is at rest,

(a) Write the equations of motion neglecting the interaction between oxygen atoms.
(b) Find the frequencies of normal mode oscillation and amplitude.

3. Consider two LC circuits, as shown in the figure below. The circuits are coupled inductively.
Assuming that the circuits are identical (that is, their natural frequency is equal),

(a) Find the normal mode frequencies.

(b) What should be the normal mode frequency when the coupling is weak?

1
(c) Let’s say that the natural frequency of these circuits is ω = 600Hz, and their coupling
coefficient is equal to 0.44. What is the value of their normal mode frequencies?

4. Consider the wave equation given below;

∂2 ∂2 1 ∂2

16 2 + 25 2 − 2 2 Ψ(⃗r, t) = 0
∂x ∂y cs ∂t

(a) What is the speed of a travelling wave solution propagating along the x-axis?
(b) What is the speed of a travelling wave solution propagating along the y-axis?
(c) For what value of a is the travelling wave given below a solution of the given wave equation?

Ψ(⃗r, t) = e−[ax+y−7cs t]

(d) What is the speed of the travelling wave given above?

5. (a) A wave with ω = 10s−1 and ⃗k = (7î + 6ĵ − 3k̂)m−1 has a phase ϕ = π/3 at the point
(0, 0, 0) at t = 0. At what time will this phase reach the point (1, 1, 1)m? What is the
phase at the point (1, 0, 0) at t = 1s? What is the phase velocity of the wave?
(b) For a wave with ⃗k = (4î + 5ĵ)m−1 and ω = 108 s−1 , what are the values of the following?
• Wavelength
• Frequency
• Phase velocity
• Phase difference between two points (x, y, z) = (3, 4, 7)m and (4, 2, 8)m.

6. The phase velocity vp in deep water is given as

r

vp =

where g is acceleration due to gravity and λ is the wavelength.

(a) Write down the relation between ω and k.

(b) Find the group velocity.
(c) Find the relation between the group and phase velocity.

2
7. For a diatomic linear lattice with two atoms of masses m and M , the dispersion relation per
acoustic branch is given by,
s 2
4 sin2 (ka)

2 1 1 1 1
ω =β + −β + −
m M m M mM

Here, k is the wavenumber, ω is the oscillation frequency of the lattice plane in the crystal, a
is the inter-molecular distance, and β is the spring constant that couples two adjacent lattice
planes.

(a) Find the group and phase velocity for a larger wavelength limit.
(b) Find the relation between these two velocities.
