SCHOOLS DIVISION OF CALAPAN CITY
PERSONAS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
I. INTRODUCTION
To raise more awareness about health and nutrition, among students, teachers, and parents, the
Department of Education implemented” GULAYAN SA PAARALAN PROGRAM (Vegetable Garden in
school), which was aligned with the DepEd Memorandum No. 223, s. 2016 which strengthens the
Implementation of the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP) in Public Schools Nationwide whose general
objective is to promote food security in schools and communities through self-help food production
activities among learners and appreciation of agriculture as a life support system.
II. KNOWLEDGE
Personas Elementary School is a public school in an agricultural area. It has enough area for
vegetable gardening. We are one of the many public schools that support the GULAYAN SA
PAARALAN Program. Our primary aim is to promote proper nutrition and reduce hunger among
learners.
Personas Elementary School has been patronizing the school feeding program for more than 10
years. To support the program and mitigate malnutrition among school children, we continually keep up
and try to enhance our Gulayan sa Paaralan.
III. OBJECTIVES
IV. OBSERVATION
The pandemic brought us too many problems not only in education but mostly in our economy. In-
person classes were canceled for almost three years. Despite of the situation, the GPP continued through
the Gulayan sa Tahanan wherein our parents and pupils have their own vegetable gardens at home. This
was monitored by the teachers.
The GPP was again given attention and eagerness during the SY 2021-2022. With the supervision of
the school principal, the participation of the 9 teachers, parents, and the pupils as well as other
stakeholders like the City Agriculture office who donated the vegetable seeds, once again a sustainable
Gulayan sa Paaralan has been established. Some garden tools like shovels and water sprinklers were also
given.
The Gulayan sa Paaralan planted crops like pechay, papaya, sitaw, eggplant, cucumber, mustard,
malunggay, camote, squash, upo, and tomatoes. Every grade level has its assigned area for vegetable
gardening. This school year we harvested plenty of vegetables particularly string beans, mustard,
cucumber, pechay, and papaya. In fact, the grade 6 class earned Php1500 for selling those vegetables. It
really serves as an income-generating project.
For this school year, the Gulayan sa Paaralan can comply with its objectives of producing crops that
are beneficial for the nutrition of SBFP beneficiaries. This also lessens the financial obligation of the
teachers and parents since we are generating our own vegetables that are vital in feeding malnourished
and IP pupils.
V. CONCLUSSIONS
The Gulayan sa Paaralan shall be implemented in every school regardless of ample or limited area.
Let us work to improve and increase vegetable production in school by teaching the learners the methods
of sustainable production of food which are applicable to their homes and important in honing their skills
in agriculture. Let us utilize school gardening in improving the education of the young ones through
supplementary feeding programs and garden sales to fund necessary activities. Let our school be the
model of cleanliness and greenness in our community.
VI. RECOMMENDATIONS
The school shall continue implementing sustainable production of vegetables.
The project must increase the level of production to sustain the needs of the learners.
The pupils must be encouraged to create their home vegetable garden.
The parents’ participation is a must to sustain and maintain the production of vegetables.
Continues support coming from the Government and Non-government agencies.
