CLOSED/OPEN BOOK TEST (ANNEXURES INCLUDED FOR REFERENCE)
Imagine you are a civil engineer tasked with developing a comprehensive water
management plan for a region that faces both water scarcity and flooding issues. In
your response, address the following aspects based on your understanding of the
hydrological cycle.
1.1 State the key components of the hydrological cycle and explain how these key
components of the hydrological cycle drives the movement of water on a global
scale. (4)
1.2 State the various forms precipitation can take? (3)
1.3 Discuss how precipitation contributes to the formation of surface water bodies and
groundwater? (3)
1.4 Discuss the significance of infiltration and how it affects the movement of water in
the soil. (3)
1.6 Define evapotranspiration and discuss its combined processes. (3)
1.7 Propose strategies to address water scarcity and flooding challenges in the region
using principles from the hydrological cycle. (4)
2.1 You're working at a weather station in a region with a dry-bulb temperature of 20°C
and an actual vapor pressure of 15.5 mm Hg. Calculate the relative humidity at this
location using the provided information. Additionally, the wet-bulb temperature is
measured at 18°C and the saturation vapor pressure at 17.5 mm Hg. (4)
2.2 A windspeed of 6.8 m/s was recorded at a standard height of 2 m. The coefficient 'n'
for that area is 0.015. Calculate the windspeed at a height of 10 m. (4)
2.3 Given the following temperature readings during a day: 9°C, 12°C, 15°C, 18°C, 21°C,
and 14°C, calculate the mean daily temperature and the true average temperature based
on these readings. (4)

3.1. In a catchment with an area of 10 000 square meters, the total precipitation is 80
mm/day. The inflow from neighboring areas measures 30 m³/s, while the outflow
from the catchment area is 25 m³/s. The losses due to evaporation are 12
mm/day. Calculate the change in storage for the catchment area during this
period. (Give your answer in m3/day) (10)
3.3 Discuss 4 factors that influence the infiltration capacity of a soil. Provide examples
to demonstrate how each of these factors can affect the infiltration capacity of soil.
