INSTRUCTIONS TO ALL STUDENTS:

YOUR SCRIPT MUST BE SAVED WITH STUDENT NO_SUBJECT CODE AND

UPLOADED ON ASSESSMENT PLATFORM.

Additional student instructions

1. Students must upload their answer scripts in a single PDF file (answer scripts must
not be password protected or uploaded as “read only” files)
2. NO emailed scripts will be accepted.
3. Students are advised to preview submissions (answer scripts) to ensure legibility
and that the correct answer script file has been uploaded.
4. Incorrect file format and uncollated answer scripts will not be considered.
5. Incorrect answer scripts and/or submissions made on unofficial examinations
platforms (including the invigilator cellphone application) will not be marked and no
opportunity will be granted for resubmission.
6. Mark awarded for incomplete submission will be the student’s final mark. No
opportunity for resubmission will be granted.
7. Mark awarded for illegible scanned submission will be the student’s final mark. No
opportunity for resubmission will be granted.
8. Submissions will only be accepted from registered student accounts.
9. Students suspected of dishonest conduct during the examinations will be
subjected to disciplinary processes. UNISA has a zero tolerance for plagiarism and/or any
other forms of academic dishonesty.
QUESTION 1 [23 MARKS]

1.1 Differentiate between transpiration and evapotranspiration process. (4)

1.2 State the requirement for clouds to form? (2)
1.3 A farmer who planted crops wants you to explain the following:
1.3.1 How the water loss is influenced by the solar radiation at stages when the
crop is still very small and at a stage when the crop is fully developed. (2)
1.3.2 State the hydrological processes that dominantly control the loss of water
when the plant is small and when the crop is well developed. (2)
1.3.3 How the characteristics of the plant/crop influence the evapotranspiration
rate? (3)
1.3.4 Explain the factors that the infiltration soil capacity in this farm would be
dependent on. (6)
1.4 Differentiate between self-recording rain gauge and non-recording rain gauge.
State one self recording rain gauge instrument and one non-recording rain gauge
instrument. (4)

QUESTION 2 [14 MARKS]

A lake with a surface area of 6000 ha, received an average inflow of 6 m3/s from
the surface runoff resources and the outflow from the lake was 4.5 m3/s. During
the same month the evaporation was 6 cm and the rainfall received by the lake
was 145 mm. Assume that there was no contribution to or from groundwater
storage.

2.1 State the water budget equation for the lake. (2)
2.2 Determine the monthly change in storage volume of the lake in m3/month.
(12)

QUESTION 3 [15 MARKS]

At Ladysmith’s weather station , long term wind speed record is available for
measurements at a height of 10 m and 15 m above the ground.For certain
calculations of evaporation the speed at 2 m is required, therefore it is desired to
extend the long term record to the 2 m level. For one set of data the speed at 10
m (ZO) and 15 m (Z) were 19.4 and 9.66 m/s respectively.

3.1 Determine the value of the exponent relating the two given speeds and
elavations? (4)
3.2 What would you predict the windspeed to be at 2 m level above the ground?
(4)
3.3 From Table 1 below, the saturation vapor is observed to be 31.82 mmHg
when the air mass temperature is 30 oC. Calculate the actual pressure if the
temperature of the air mass is 30 oC and the relative humidity is 80%. (4)

QUESTION 4 [18 MARKS]

State the names of the following descriptions or hydrological cycle processes.

(2 Marks each correct answer)

4.1 A process where a portion of water from the ground surface is taken back to
the atmosphere through vegetation.
4.2 A process that transfers water from surface water bodies to the atmosphere.
4.3 A process that does not allow groundwater storage.
4.4 A process that transfers water from the atmosphere to the earth’s surface.
4.5 A process where rainwater does not runoff, but seeps into the ground.
4.6 The precipitation that reaches the stream.
4.7 The source of heat causing evaporation.
4.8 The amount of evaporation that occurs when the surface has unlimited water
supply.
4.9 A process where a portion of water is taken back to the atmosphere through
vegetation and open water surfaces.
