In 1500, the Kingdom of Maynila was established under the Bolkiah dynasty after the Tondo Dynasty was defeated by the Bruneian Empire. Mount Pinatubo erupted around this time. In 1521, Ferdinand Magellan arrived in the Philippines, becoming the first European to visit. He explored the islands and made alliances with local leaders. However, he was later killed in the Battle of Mactan against Lapu-Lapu. In 1565, Miguel López de Legazpi established the first permanent Spanish settlement in Cebu. He later moved the capital to Manila, establishing Spanish rule over the Philippines which lasted over 300 years.
