Welcome to the Science 6 Module 6 on Factors that Affect the Formation of a


Mixture!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

mixture,
2. perform experiments to show the effects of different factors that affect how
mixture is formed; and

From our previous lesson, we have learned that substances can be dissolved
by certain material which is called solvent. Solvent dissolves substances called
solute. When solute and solvent are mixed, they form a uniform substance called
solution.
Let us do a simple game called Throw Back!
Identify the substances inside the box if it is solute or solvent. Place them
inside the correct bin. Write your answer on a separate sheet.

Solute Solvent

LESSON

There are times that you want things to dissolve quickly as possible. Just like
when you prepare an iced tea, you don’t just sit and watch the powdered juice to
dissolve by itself. You will stir it until you think it is dissolved enough for you to
drink. Also, we usually use hot water to dissolve coffee granules easily.

There are some factors that affect how substances dissolve in a solvent. The
extent a solid material may be dissolved is called solubility. There are solid
substances that can be dissolved, and they are called soluble. When a solid material
does not dissolve in a solvent, it is insoluble. But what might affect the solubility of
a certain solute in a mixture?

Size of Particles

Look at the illustrations on the left. Which


do you think will melt easily? The block of ice or
the ice cube? Why?

Size does matter. Substance with small

the lesser the time to dissolve.

To further understand how the size of particles affect how mixture is formed,

try doing the Activity 1: “Bar Soap vs. Powdered Soap” on the next page. (Please
proceed to Activity 1.)

Stirring of mixture

Every time you prepare your favorite drink, you tend to get a spoon and stir it
until you are satisfied with the mixture. Stirring greatly affects how fast the solvent
dissolves the solute. Stirring the solute particles continuously affects how quickly a
solute dissolve but has no guarantee on how much of it will be dissolved in a solvent.
For example, you are dissolving a powdered chocolate in a hot water, you stir the
mixture impatiently, so you stop for a bit second and drink your chocolate drink. As
you drink the few last drops, you notice that there are some solute particles sitting
at the bottom of the container. These particles are not dissolved completely in the
mixture because the stirring is stopped. Also, when the mixture is stirred briskly, it
dissolves faster than when it is stirred slowly.

Temperature

Solvents dissolve the solutes. But temperature is another thing that can affect
them. Temperature may be cold, warm, or hot. The solubility of a solute is greatly
affected by the temperature of its solvent. Let’s say, mixing 3-in-1 coffee in a cold
water makes it difficult to dissolve the solute particles. But hot water does the job
effortlessly.

This time, to further enhance your knowledge on how temperature affects the
formation of mixture, turn to page 5 of this module, and do Activity no.3 “Whether
you like it or HOT!”
ACTIVITIES

Directions: In performing the activities, please make sure that you have an adult
supervision and that you have permission from your parent/ guardian
to use the materials inside your house. Remember to be polite in asking
them.

Activity 1: Bar Soap vs. Powdered Soap


Materials: 1 tablespoon of powdered detergent
1 bar soap
2 pcs. container with water
Procedure:
1. Half–fill the containers with water.
2. Soak the bar soap in the first container (label with A) and then the powdered
detergent in the other container (label with B)
3. Observe for 30 minutes.
4. Record your observations on the table below. Use separate sheet.

Activity 2: “To Stir or Not To Stir!”
Materials: 3 tablespoon of chocolate powder
3 drinking cups half-filled with water
3 teaspoons
Procedure:
1. Put one teaspoon of chocolate powder in each drinking cups.
2. Label each cup with1, 2, and 3.
3. Do not stir cup no.1
4. Stir the mixture in cup no. 2 slowly counting 10 seconds.
5. Stir the mixture in cup no. 3 briskly (in a quick and active manner) for 10 seconds.
Observe what happens in each cup.

Questions:
1. In which cup has the powdered chocolate dissolved fastest? slowest? Why?

Activity 3: Whether You Like It or HOT!


Materials: sachet of powdered milk

half-filled cup of hot water

half-filled cup of cold water

half-filled cup of tap water

Procedure:

1. Label the cup of hot water A, cold water B, and tap water C.

2. Mix 1 teaspoon of powdered milk in each cup of water.

3. Stir them slowly with the use of a clean teaspoon one after another.

4. Record your observations on the table below. Use separate sheet.

To sum up the things we have learned today, please answer the crossword
puzzle below. Look for the hint on the right side of the crossword puzzle and write
your answer on a separate sheet.

There are several factors that affect the solubility of substances. These factors
also affect how mixture is formed.

The three factors are size of particles, temperature of the solvent, and
stirring of mixture.

A. Size of particles affects how fast the substance dissolves. The smaller the
particle the faster it dissolves in a mixture.
B. Temperature of the solvent affects how fast the solute dissolves in a
mixture. Hot water dissolves solute faster than cold and tap water.
C. Stirring of mixture affects how fast the solvent dissolves the solute in a
mixture. The faster you stir, the more solute/particle is dissolved.
VALUING

With the current situation today where no one can leave the house
except those who are assigned to buy the essentials. Each member of the
family is expected to perform one’s duty at home. One day, as you are washing
the dishes, your sink waste pipe gets clogged. Looking at it closely, you
happen to see some dirt, stain, and other left-over food that block the water
way of your sink. And so, upon consulting your mother, she says that you
need to pour the drain with hot/ boiling water.

Question:

Why do you think your mother suggests boiling water to clear the clogged
waste pipe of your sink?

Water as a universal solvent dissolves many particles. And using


hot/boiling water is an added factor that makes it more effective in dissolving
materials. With the clogged sink pipes, hot water easily softens the particles
in it and even dissolves some particles in the pipe. But still, prevention is
better than giving solution.
