⮚ Soil is the part of the earth’s crust that supports plants.


⮚ Soil could be up to about thirty or forty centimeters deep.
⮚ Soil is made up of rocks, minerals, water, air, and humus (remains of
dead plants and animals).
⮚ Below the soil is the underlying rock from which soil is formed.
⮚ When the surface is removed a series of layers are removed.
⮚ The top layer is thin and is called the topsoil.
⮚ We can find gravel, stones, sand and clay under the topsoil.
⮚ Further down the soil we can find rocks.

Clayey Soil

⮚ Clayey soil is made up of very tiny particles.


⮚ It feels very sticky when wet and does not let water pass through it
easily.
⮚ During the dry season this type of soil becomes very hard and large

⮚ Rice, sugar cane, coconuts and bananas grow well in clayey soil.

⮚ A mixture of sandy soil,clayey soil together with humus is called


loam.
⮚ Green vegetables such as bora, lettuce and calalu grow best in
this type of soil.
⮚ This soil is perfect for plant growth and is used in kitchen gardens.
⮚ Humus is the decayed remains of plants and animals.
