MA-1001 Sequences Assignment-1

1. Show that limit of a convergent sequence is unique. That is, show that if L1 and L2

are numbers such that an → L1 and an → L2 , then L1 = L2 .

2. Show that if a2k → L and a2k+1 → L, then an → L.

3. Let {xn } be a sequence of strictly positive real numbers such that lim xxn+1
n
= L.

Show that if L < 1 then lim xn = 0 and if L > 1 then lim xn = ∞.

4. Investigate whether the following sequences have limits as n → ∞ and if so give the

limits

(a) xn = 1
12 +1
+ 1
22 +1
+ 1
32 +1
+ ··· + 1
n2 +1
n2 n2 n2 n2
(b) xn = n3 +n+1
+ n3 +n+2
+ n3 +n+3
+ ··· + n3 +2n

(c) an = n
3 − [ n3 ]
1−2+3−4···+(−1)n+1 .n
(d) xn = n
√ √
(e) x1 = 2 and xn = 2 + xn−1 for n > 1
n
(f ) x1 = 1 and xn = ( n+1 )x2n for n > 1
n2
(g) an = 2n+1 sin n1
1
(h) an = (3n + 5n ) n

5. Prove that

(b) lim xn = 0 if |x| < 1

n→∞
1
(c) lim n n = 1
n→∞
1
(d) lim x n = 1 if x > 0
n→∞

6. Show that the sequence xn = (1 + n1 )n is monotonic increasing and bounded above.

7. Let x1 = 1 and xn+1 = 1 + xn for all n ∈ N. Examine whether the sequence {xn }

is convergent. Also. find the limit if it is convergent.

8. Let x1 = 4 and xn+1 = 3 − 2

xn for all n ∈ N. Examine whether the sequence {xn } is

convergent. Also. find the limit if it is convergent.

αn
9. Show that for any α > 0, limn→∞ n! =0
