Is Architecture A Profession or A Business
Is Architecture A Profession or A Business
By definition, Architecture is the art and technique of designing and building, as distinguished from
the skills associated with construction. The practice of architecture is employed to fulfill both practical and
expressive requirements, and thus it serves both utilitarian and aesthetic ends (Britannica n.d.). Many of us
would probably consider that Architecture is a profession itself alone, as Architects often recognize their
professional identity with respect to the buildings they design. Due to the ever-changing society and
environment, Architects are force to reconsider their expertise and the manner in which it is deployed. In
light of the current global economic crisis, environmental challenges, and geopolitical upheaval, societies
are under increasing pressure to come up with innovative answers to significant, pressing problems that go
beyond the built environment's own design. Thus making it a more profession’s self-conception. But little
did we know that they perform this profession to render service to people. Therefore with this we also can
say that Architecture, is aligned with entrepreneurship as well, and does not consider as profession alone.
Architecture ventures their skills and knowledge to provide design services to a client who intends to build.
As by description, “Entrepreneurship is a process by which individuals…pursue opportunities without
regard to the resources they currently control .” As a business-minded definition of architecture it would
probably be, a process by which architects pursue building opportunities without controlling the resources
necessary to build. Entrepreneurship is also about generating value by combining a special set of
resources to bring opportunities and chances, in lined with this architectural practice is all about technique
of adding value to the built environment by combining a special set of physical resources to give prospects.
Even though it might be argued that architecture is an entrepreneurial endeavor, entrepreneurship isn't
frequently taught or practiced explicitly in architecture. As a result, architects frequently don't think of
themselves as entrepreneurs or use their entrepreneurial potential outside of the realm of architecture.
Because entrepreneurship has its limitations and has the ability to play a more integrated role in
architectural education and practice, there are some characteristics and factors to deliberate if we consider
that architecture is an entrepreneurship. But with this connections between we can expand our
understanding in Architecture and Entrepreneurship to basically associate each other’s functions to create
an array of opportunities and social changes.
As architecture student, I say that architecture is a business oriented profession. Since we are to
build our own firms or do services to people, but we basically perform our activities outside the zone of
business, but we consider our identity as professionals, to do our job the best as we can. Therefore it is a
must to know and assess topics like this since it is essential as we go through our endeavors in life as a
professional Architect, practicing our career not only for our own sake but for the improvement of our
society as well. We must take into account different consideration especially in rendering our service.
Because we as architects, build future.
