Imagine you are a detective and you have to find a lost treasure. You have received a tip that
the treasure is buried somewhere in the walled city of Lahore and someone has emailed you a
photo as well. What are things you will need to get there and explore the site?

What is a map?
The first and the most important thing you will need is a map. A map is a drawing of a place
from above. It can show a place as small as your room and as big as the entire world. Look at the
World Map below to see the oceans and continents.
An ocean is a huge body of salty water and a continent is a large body of land.
Look at your room, how does it look like? Draw a map of your bedroom.

Continents and Oceans
Scientists believe this is how the continents looked like millions of years ago. They were all
connected as one huge piece.
Did you know that approximately 300 million years ago, all continents were a
one big piece called the Pangea? With time, the continents moved to their
positions as we know now. They are still moving which means new continents can
form in the next few million years!

A Globe
Like a map, a globe also helps us find out about the countries and oceans of the world. A globe is
a 3D model of the Earth. This means it is exactly like the Earth but is very small in size.

Direction Words and Map Elements
Maps without any words will be useless. As a result, when you see a map, look for important
clues. A map should have a title, a compass rose and a key. A title tells us what the map is about.
A compass rose tells us about the directions. A key tells us about the different symbols on the
map.
Let’s look at the compass rose below. Let’s look at a map key.
